The first Mario Party game was released in 1998 for the Nintendo 64. While not the very first game to feature characters from the Mario universe outside of the main series, it was a novel concept at the time. Its combination of a board game and quick, competitive mini-games quickly made it popular with players – and unfortunately, led to a lot of broken Nintendo 64 controllers! The series continues to be enjoyed by gamers today, though not all of the newer installments have been hits.
Here are all 18 Mario Party games ranked.
18) Mario Party 10

While Mario Party 10 added the enjoyable Bowser Party mode, it didn’t offer much long-term replay value. The game started to feel repetitive, and bringing back the car system from Mario Party 9 wasn’t a popular choice. Ultimately, it was a fairly unremarkable game on a console that didn’t sell well, making for a disappointing experience.
17) Mario Party Advance

Mario Party Advance (MPA) was the first Mario Party game you could play on the go, which was a big deal at the time. But it wasn’t much of a party experience, as it was mostly designed for one player. To play with others, you needed three friends, and each of them needed their own copy of the game – something that wasn’t very common.
16) Mario Party: The Top 100

The Top 100 aimed to bring together the best minigames from the Mario Party series onto a portable system. However, the game feels unfinished and rushed due to the limitations of the handheld console. While it had a lot of promise, the developers unfortunately didn’t quite deliver.
15) Mario Party DS

Mario Party DS offers a huge variety of fun with 70 different minigames. It’s easy to play with friends too – up to four people can join in using the DS’s Download Play feature. While you still need four DS systems in total, that’s an improvement over previous handheld Mario Party games.
14) Mario Party: Island Tour

Similar to the DS version, Island Tour lets you play with friends using just one game cartridge, which is great for multiplayer fun. It offers a variety of enjoyable boards with different gameplay styles, plus a large selection of minigames. However, the single-player mode is fairly standard and you might find yourself finishing it quickly.
13) Mario Party 9

Okay, so Mario Party 9 was the first one to try out that whole car mechanic, which really changed how the boards played – things felt way more linear and games went by a lot faster. Honestly, the minigames were a blast, especially with the motion controls. It’s not my favorite Wii Mario Party, but it’s still a pretty fun game overall and a solid addition to the series.
12) Mario Party: Star Rush

While Star Rush is fairly simple, the Toad Scramble mode is a genuinely enjoyable game to play on the go. It’s different from other Mario Party games because everyone moves at the same time, which suits handheld play. The game doesn’t have a ton of minigames, but that’s understandable considering it introduced a lot of new concepts.
11) Mario Party 8

When Mario Party 8 came out on the Wii, Nintendo really emphasized using the motion controls, which made it a fun game to play with friends – just like many other Wii games from that time. Compared to other Mario Party titles, MP8 feels a bit reliant on tricks and doesn’t really add anything new to the usual gameplay.
10) Super Mario Party

Super Mario Party brought the series back to its roots on the Nintendo Switch. By removing the car mechanic from previous games, it offered a more classic party experience that fans appreciated. While it doesn’t quite reach the level of the original Mario Party games, it was a good choice for anyone wanting that familiar gameplay on the Switch.
9) Mario Party 4

Mario Party 4 was the first game in the series released for the GameCube, and it debuted some popular minigames like Booksquirm. While enjoyable, it doesn’t have as many traditional minigames as other entries – only 40 in total – and its single-player mode is quite basic. It’s a decent game, but Nintendo has since made better installments in the Mario Party series.
8) Mario Party

The first game established what would become the series’ signature style and laid the groundwork for future installments. It launched with strong level design and fun minigames that are still enjoyable today. While it shows its age, it’s clear the developers have refined and improved upon these ideas over time.
7) Mario Party 7

As a huge Mario Party fan, I remember Mario Party 7 being the last one on the GameCube, and it was a blast! What I loved was that up to eight of us could play together, and the boards felt really new and inventive. Honestly, though, it didn’t quite reach my top tier because sometimes it just felt a little…familiar. It’s still a great game, but it didn’t always stand out from the others, you know?
6) Mario Party 5

Similar to the fifth game in the series, many Mario Party games feel familiar. During the GameCube years, the Mario Party games were consistently good – you always knew what to expect. While Mario Party 5 wasn’t revolutionary, it had some of the best minigames in the series, making it a standout title.
5) Mario Party 6

Mario Party 6 was notable for being the first game in the series to use the GameCube microphone, but it’s remembered for something even better: its unique day-and-night system. This system changes the game board every few turns, keeping things fresh and exciting. Beyond that, it delivers the classic Mario Party experience fans already know and love.
4) Mari Party Superstars

While Superstars could use more boards, it’s easily one of the best Mario Party games released in the last ten years. The boards included are beloved classics, and with 100 minigames featuring many fan favorites, it’s a wonderfully nostalgic experience, especially with the option to play with friends.
3) Super Mario Party Jamboree

Jamboree is a big improvement over Superstars. It features a large cast of characters, a brand new online mode for up to 20 players, and tons of fresh minigames. After a rough patch, this feels like a true return to form for the Mario Party series, delivering the fun, chaotic party game experience it’s known for. If you own a Switch and enjoy playing with friends, this game is essential.
2) Mario Party 2

The second game added a lot of fun new elements, such as different kinds of minigames – Battles, Item challenges, and Duels. It also had a unique feature where characters would change outfits to fit the game board. Hopefully, we’ll see that playful feature again in future installments.
1) Mario Party 3

Many fans consider Mario Party 3 to be the best in the series. It was a fantastic conclusion to the Mario Party games on Nintendo 64, successfully blending the best elements of the first two games with improved graphics. While later installments added new features, Mario Party 3 truly captures the essence of what makes the series so enjoyable.
