This year saw a lot of surprise game releases. We got unexpected drops like The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, Pokemon Friends, and several games appearing suddenly for the Switch 2. While surprise releases can work really well, as with Elder Scrolls, they don’t always succeed. Releasing an older game on a new platform without much promotion can be risky, and that’s what happened with a single-player RPG that unexpectedly launched on Xbox last week. However, it hasn’t been all disappointing news.
The recent Xbox Partner Showcase revealed some exciting news, including a new game in the Vampire Survivors series and the announcement that Dave the Diver would be released on Xbox. In fact, Dave the Diver became available to play on Xbox the same day it was announced! However, it seems Xbox players weren’t immediately rushing to buy the game. The announcement did have one other surprising consequence, though.
Dave the Diver Sales on Xbox Look Bleak, But That Shadow Drop Still Might’ve Been a Good Idea
After launching on PC, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch, Dave the Diver recently came to Xbox. However, it doesn’t appear to have been a major hit on the platform. Data from True Achievements shows the game debuted at number 421 in terms of popularity on Xbox, suggesting a relatively small initial audience.
Several things likely impacted the game’s performance. Most notably, Silent Hill 2 was unexpectedly released at the same time. Additionally, many players now prefer to play games included with Xbox Game Pass instead of purchasing older titles at full price. However, even if the Xbox release didn’t lead to huge sales, it may have reminded players about the game.
When Dave the Diver unexpectedly released on Xbox, it was announced that a new expansion, In the Jungle, is coming next year. The trailer for the DLC showed off some new gameplay, and while it didn’t immediately drive Xbox sales, it did remind many players to revisit the game on Steam.
SteamDB data shows that Dave the Diver started gaining more players around November 20th, coinciding with its surprise release on Xbox and the announcement of new downloadable content. However, the game’s popularity really took off when it went on sale for Black Friday on Steam. While it originally cost $19.99 on Xbox, many players purchased it for $11 during the Steam sale.
It’s hard to say whether the recent increase in players is because of the sale price or people coming back after watching the new DLC trailer. However, despite a potentially weak start on Xbox, Dave the Diver seems to be gaining popularity on PC. Just a heads up, the sale continues until November 30th, so you have one last day to grab Dave the Diver on Steam at 50% off if you haven’t played it yet.
