As a huge Harry Potter fan, I think some scenes in the movies instantly blew me away – like Harry’s first Quidditch match in The Philosopher’s Stone, when Dobby finally became a free elf in The Chamber of Secrets, Harry casting the Patronus by the lake in The Prisoner of Azkaban, and the epic duel between Dumbledore and Voldemort in The Order of the Phoenix. But honestly, a lot of other scenes didn’t immediately grab me – and I think that’s okay! Just like the books, these movies really grow with you. I’ve watched them at different stages of my life, from being a kid to now, and certain moments hit completely differently depending on where I am in life. It’s cool how they change and resonate over the years.
For me, a prime example of this comes from what’s often considered the worst Harry Potter movie: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1. I’ve actually come to appreciate it more over time and now think it’s underrated. I used to dislike the scene where Harry and Hermione dance in this film, particularly when I first saw it in 2010. It happened after Ron left the search for Horcruxes, and as they danced in the tent to Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds’ “O Children,” I found it really awkward and uncomfortable. What bothered me even more was that this scene didn’t even appear in the original book, and as a devoted reader, I was quite bothered by that.
Looking back, and maybe having matured a little, this scene has become one of my absolute favorites in the whole series, even though it still sparks debate among fans. I’ve always adored Harry and Hermione’s friendship, and moments focused solely on them are surprisingly rare. So, seeing them share a genuinely sweet and bonding scene is really special – it reminds me of another beautiful moment in The Half-Blood Prince when Hermione breaks down to Harry about Ron and Lavender. This one feels like a perfect continuation of that. It’s a rare, tender glimpse of them at their most vulnerable, letting them be kids again even amidst everything, and it really highlights how strong they are and how much their friendship means. Plus, it feels like the series finally reached a new level of emotional depth with this scene.
As a movie lover, I’ve always been struck by this scene with Harry and Hermione. It’s like a breath of fresh air amidst all the chaos of the war they’re fighting. They’re forced to be adults way too soon, and this moment feels like a quiet pause, a chance to just be for a little while. Knowing Ron had just left makes it a little sad, but honestly, that just makes it even more powerful. What I really appreciate now, especially with each rewatch, is how the movie remembers to show us these small, human moments even while they’re on this huge quest to defeat a really terrifying villain. It’s a beautiful reminder of what they’re fighting for, and I didn’t fully grasp that when I first saw it.
I initially shared many of the criticisms of The Deathly Hallows – Part 1. I thought it was slow, lacked substance, and didn’t need to be split into two films. However, I was completely mistaken. This movie isn’t filler at all; in fact, it has the strongest character development of the entire Harry Potter series. It’s essential because it builds a solid foundation for Part 2 and allows the story to unfold naturally, making the overall impact much greater – and the dance scene perfectly exemplifies this.
The Harry Potter movies are available to stream on HBO Max.
