DC K.O. Is a Fight Between Superman and Darkseid, and Darkseid Is Winning

DC’s latest major storyline is already in full swing, and the conflicts are more intense and personal than ever before. Titled DC K.O., the story began with the arrival of Darkseid, who has become an incredibly powerful being called King Omega after merging with the Absolute Universe. Facing a threat unlike any they’ve seen, the Justice League determined the only way to defeat him was to create their own King Omega. This led them to the Heart of Apocalypse, where they entered a tournament to gain the necessary power, but they soon discovered things weren’t what they seemed.

Darkseid is secretly posing as Booster Gold and is working to destroy the Justice League from within. His plan is succeeding because the League is distracted by a tournament where progress requires them to adopt Darkseid’s own ruthless methods – embracing negativity and cruelty to create a powerful energy source. Essentially, they have to become like the villain to save the world. Superman is particularly conflicted, as he’s unknowingly at the center of a deeper philosophical conflict with Darkseid, and Darkseid seems to be gaining the upper hand.

A Tournament of Death and Destruction

The second issue began with thirty-two contestants unexpectedly appearing on a desolate, ruined planet – a custom arena built for the competition. They were tasked with locating powerful artifacts hidden throughout the area, and only the first sixteen to find one would move forward. These artifacts included items like the Lantern power rings and Psycho Pirate masks, plus one unknown object. Superman immediately sought out Lex Luthor, maintaining his claim that he was only participating to neutralize the villains, as he struggled to understand the purpose of the tournament itself.

Superman was caught off guard when Lex Luthor unleashed a Kryptonite attack, severing his hand and leaving him helpless. As Lex and the Joker harmed his friends, Superman realized he needed to make a drastic choice. Remembering Darkseid’s sacrifice – losing a hand and ultimately his life – for ultimate power, Superman followed suit. He stabbed himself with a piece of the Kryptonite, gaining a similar, immense power called the Omega Sanction. With this new ability, he quickly defeated Lex’s army of undead, allowing everyone to advance. However, this victory came at a terrible cost, representing the absolute worst outcome for Superman.

Accepting Power Means Control and Hate

After finally losing his temper with Lex Luthor, Superman found himself facing Darkseid’s ultimate punishment, the Omega Sanction. The situation was made worse when he witnessed Supergirl being eliminated from the tournament after selflessly trying to help him, caught off guard by Captain Atom. Seeing her noble attempt fail because of another’s harshness, Superman recalled advice Batman had given him earlier. Bruce had suggested Clark could be a president if he wasn’t Superman, but Clark believed he wasn’t suited for leadership that required making difficult, potentially unethical decisions for the sake of the greater good – choices Superman refused to make. He wouldn’t force his will on others, yet that’s precisely what Darkseid was now compelling him to do.

Superman is attempting to approach this competition with his heroic principles, but each time he does, he faces negative consequences. His focus on helping others led to Batman’s death and Supergirl’s elimination. In contrast, the villain Lex Luthor was favored for his ruthless actions, and surprisingly, Superman also benefited – he advanced by reluctantly accepting a path similar to Darkseid’s. To succeed in the tournament, Superman must abandon his heroic instincts. The story explores his internal conflict: is he not doing enough to protect the world, or is he risking becoming a tyrannical ruler by trying too hard?

Currently, Superman is starting to embrace Darkseid’s destructive mindset, giving in to anger and hatred. He believes this is the only way to defeat the villain, and is abandoning the principles that previously guided his victories. However, even if Superman wins, he’ll have to become as monstrously angry and hateful as Darkseid himself. And even with good intentions, becoming like Darkseid would ultimately mean failing as a hero. If a hero were to defeat Darkseid by becoming King Omega, Darkseid would still win, as it would prove that true heroism is ineffective.

This all began with Darkseid’s desire for victory. If Superman succumbs to anger and negativity, Darkseid will ultimately succeed. Superman has always represented hope and the pursuit of goodness, but if he loses faith in those ideals, hope will be crushed by evil. Darkseid will either defeat Superman through force, or by breaking his spirit. No matter what happens, if things don’t change, Darkseid is destined to win.
