Russell T Davies, the head writer of Doctor Who, has explained how the Doctor’s unavailability will affect the new spin-off series, The War Between the Land and the Sea.
In the upcoming five-episode series, UNIT will face a global threat without the Doctor’s help. The story will feature the return of the Sea Devils, classic monsters from Doctor Who, as they rise from the oceans to challenge humankind.
Giving a hint of what’s in store, Davies shared that a fascinating aspect of the new Doctor Who is exploring a world without the Doctor. The series will focus on how humanity handles things on its own, facing monsters, finding romance, and dealing with action-packed chases and gunfights.
He explained that the show is a bit more challenging than Doctor Who, dealing with more difficult subjects and often provoking stronger reactions from viewers. This is largely because the Doctor isn’t present to offer a familiar, comforting perspective.
Usually, the Doctor can rely on a special way to keep everyone safe during dangerous situations. But that option is no longer available. Now, the characters are truly in a desperate situation, facing extreme challenges and pushed to their absolute limits.

Russell Tovey will play Barclay, an ordinary man thrust into an extraordinary situation in the new series, The War Between the Land and the Sea. As Earth faces a large-scale conflict, Barclay unexpectedly becomes a key player and develops a close connection with the character Salt, played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw, throughout the season.
Although the new show isn’t directly connected to Doctor Who, writer Pete McTighe has assured fans that it will include hidden references and surprises for those who enjoy the original series.
Davies explains that the exciting thing about the Sea Devils is how little was known about them previously. They were originally presented as simple monsters appearing on a beach or at the Sea Base, with little focus on their culture or how they lived. This new approach allows for a much deeper exploration of their society and background.
Doctor Who fans are finally going to see the Doctor’s home world! The show will dedicate an entire episode – the third one – to exploring it, and the creator says it’s going to be amazing.
It’s been really enjoyable to build out the story’s history by showing how the characters live, what their world is like, and all the different creatures that inhabit it.
