5 Cartoon Network Shows That Are Criminally Underrated

Although Cartoon Network now focuses on streaming, many people fondly remember watching it on TV during the 1990s and 2000s, enjoying shows like Powerpuff Girls. For many, Saturday mornings meant tuning in to Cartoon Network. Today, Warner Bros. owns the network, and while it still exists, its original website is gone. Most of its shows have moved to the Max streaming service, which currently offers only 11 classic Cartoon Network programs.

Many people have fond memories of Cartoon Network’s best years, when it had a huge variety of shows. While some, like Courage the Cowardly Dog and Dexter’s Laboratory, were massive hits, others were well-made but didn’t become as popular.

5) Robotboy

Robotboy was a cartoon series that aired on Cartoon Network in 2006, created by British and French animators. The show shared similarities with the classic tale of Pinocchio. Robotboy was a robot built by a Japanese scientist and sent to live with a ten-year-old boy for protection. Through his experiences, Robotboy learned how to act more like a human child than a machine.

Although it only ran for two seasons, this show mixed exciting adventures with battles to protect Robotboy from villains trying to take him back. It’s too bad it wasn’t more popular, because it was a creative and fun cartoon.

4) Class of 3000

During its peak years, Cartoon Network’s Class of 3000 stood out as a uniquely entertaining and diverse show. Premiering in 2006, the cartoon followed a music teacher and his inspiring, eclectic students over two seasons.

This cartoon shares a similar idea to the TV show Welcome Back Kotter: a former student returns to teach in his old neighborhood, working with students others have dismissed. But instead of focusing on classroom chaos, this cartoon aimed to be uplifting. It was created by hip-hop artist André 3000, which meant the writing felt authentic and showed a genuine understanding of the music world.

3) What’s With Andy?

If you’ve ever enjoyed playing pranks, you’ll likely connect with Andy Larkin, the main character in What’s With Andy? The cartoon follows Andy, a teenager known for his mischievous pranks, as he tries to win over a girl and constantly gets into trouble with his sister, who disapproves of his antics.

The cartoon What’s With Andy? was actually inspired by a series of children’s books written by Andy Griffith – who many younger viewers will recognize as the original Matlock. Both the books and the show are fun and family-friendly, and are worth revisiting.

2) The Secret Saturdays

The Saturdays were a family dedicated to the study of hidden creatures – cryptids – and fiercely protective of their secrets. As members of a clandestine organization focused on unusual and potentially dangerous scientific fields, they regularly encountered these creatures during their work around the globe.

The show, which only lasted two seasons, included the Saturdays’ son, Zac, as a character. What made Zac particularly interesting was his apparent ability to communicate with mysterious creatures using his mind – a power the series could have delved into further if it hadn’t been cancelled.

1) Chowder

The cartoon Chowder has a simple setup: it follows a young boy learning to be a chef. A lot of the show’s funny moments come from Chowder’s enormous appetite – he’s always eating things he shouldn’t while working – and his habit of getting into trouble because he’s easily distracted.

This funny cartoon centers around a main character with big dreams of becoming a chef, despite not having much talent for it. His friends do their best to support him, while a girl named Panini constantly tries to sabotage him because she’s secretly in love with him. Many people think this show deserves more attention, and the creators are interested in bringing it back with a reboot if Warner Bros. approves the idea.
