New Netflix Movie With Best Picture Buzz Is Officially a Hit With Millions of Views (& It’s a Must Watch)

A new movie on Netflix is gaining a lot of buzz and is expected to be an Oscar nominee. While Netflix is releasing more films with Oscar potential, some fans are frustrated that these movies aren’t shown in theaters widely. Instead, Netflix prioritizes streaming views. This year’s potential Oscar contenders include Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein and the latest Knives Out installment, Wake Up Dead Man.

Despite concerns, Netflix subscribers haven’t missed out on a critically acclaimed film. Train Dreams is currently a top 10 hit on the platform, joining popular titles like Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, the new animated film In Your Dreams, and K-pop Demon Hunters.

Clint Bentley’s 2023 film, Sing Sing, garnered Coleman Domingo an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. Train Dreams stars Joel Edgerton as Robert Grainier, and tells the story of his life over 80 years in Bonners Ferry, Idaho. The film begins with Robert arriving as an orphan on the Great Northern Railway. The title refers to a traumatic event – Robert witnessing a Chinese worker being thrown from a railway bridge by white workers – which continues to affect him throughout his life.

The film Train Dreams has been highly praised, earning a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics particularly loved the directing by Bentley and the performance by Edgerton, calling the movie a beautiful and thoughtful look at America. It’s already won awards at several film festivals and is expected to receive Oscar nominations next year.

Train Dreams Is a Highlight for Netflix This Year

Although Netflix often bypasses traditional movie theaters, they’re still releasing quality films, and this year has a few standouts, with Train Dreams being a particularly strong contender. Frankenstein is visually stunning and features an exceptional performance by Jacob Elordi, though some critics have noted its length and slow pacing. The latest Knives Out film is also available, but as a popular genre piece, it’s not expected to be a major awards contender.

Train Dreams is a stunning film with strong potential for Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Director, and Actor. Beyond being a beautiful story about a man’s life amidst a changing America, it’s also been critically acclaimed. With a 95% rating from critics and an 81% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, viewers and professionals alike are praising Joel Edgerton’s performance as a career best, which explains its current popularity on Netflix.

Honestly, it’s a real shame such a gorgeous and moving film didn’t get a proper theatrical run. Netflix made it a streaming-only release, and while it did play in a few cinemas briefly in November, it wasn’t nearly the push Guillermo del Toro got for Frankenstein or what Rian Johnson experienced with Wake Up Dead Man. I get that keeping subscribers happy is important for Netflix, but it’s just not great for film in general, especially for those of us who believe movies deserve to be seen on the big screen. Sadly, Train Dreams didn’t get that chance, but I still think anyone who loves a beautiful, heartfelt story should definitely seek it out and watch it at home.
