Dragon Ball’s Latest Launch Is Off to a Terrible Start (And Fans Are Disappointed)

The Dragon Ball franchise is incredibly popular, so new products usually do well. However, the recently opened official Dragon Ball store in Tokyo is receiving criticism online, with some fans questioning the quality of the merchandise. This isn’t a new show or announcement – it’s the first official retail store for the franchise, which opened on November 14th, 2025, in Tokyo Station. It opened near the 41st anniversary of Dragon Ball and was advertised as the only place to find exclusive merchandise.

The store’s advertising highlighted a completely immersive experience, promising to transport fans into the world of Dragon Ball. Ironically, the store’s design is now receiving criticism online. While the designs showcase Goku in four different forms, fans feel these depictions don’t accurately represent the character or the meaning behind his transformations. Because the designs don’t seem true to the source material, the new Dragon Ball store is getting off to a rocky start, with many believing this reflects the overall quality of the experience.

Recent online depictions of Goku showcase him in his Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan, Ultra Instinct, and Super Saiyan 4 forms. However, many fans feel the artwork doesn’t accurately capture the essence of these transformations. The colors are too vibrant, Ultra Instinct Goku’s body proportions are off, and the Super Saiyan 4 design doesn’t convey the wild, primal energy it should. The artwork has received criticism, with some comparing its quality to that of designs for the game Fortnite.

Fortnite is known for its over-the-top, cartoonish characters, which doesn’t really fit Goku. Goku is a Saiyan warrior, and his transformations are meant to show how strong and determined his people are. The fact that the official Dragon Ball store can’t even get Goku’s design right suggests they’re more interested in making money off the franchise than honoring it.

It’s possible the designs look worse in the photos because they were taken with a phone in bad lighting and from unflattering angles. However, fans are currently very disappointed, and the best way to fix this is for the official Dragon Ball store to release better marketing materials that truly reflect the original promise of the designs.
