This popular science fiction show has been a television staple for more than 60 years. Throughout its history, there have been fifteen different versions of the show, and fourteen actors have played the main character in the original series.
As a longtime fan, I’m intrigued by the news that Doctor Who is getting a brand new spinoff, The War Between the Land and the Sea. It’s coming December 7th, and honestly, it feels perfectly timed. The main Doctor Who series has been through a bit of turbulence lately, leaving its future a little unclear. Showrunner Russell T Davies recently told Radio Times how this new series will address the Doctor’s absence, and I’m eager to see how they handle it. It sounds like a fascinating way to expand the Who universe while navigating the current situation.
Showrunner Russell T Davies hinted at what viewers can expect from the new Doctor Who spinoff, explaining that it explores a world without the Doctor. The series will focus on how humanity deals with this new reality, facing monsters, experiencing romance, and getting caught up in action-packed chases and gunfights.
I heard from the creator that the new show is going to be more challenging than Doctor Who. He said it deals with really difficult subjects, and people are likely to have strong reactions to it, largely because it doesn’t have the Doctor to lighten things up.
Usually, the Doctor can use a special blue portal to keep everyone safe, but that’s no longer an option, Davies explained. As a result, the characters are facing incredibly difficult and dangerous situations, really being tested to their limits.
What Happens in The War Between the Land and the Sea?
A new spin-off series is coming, starring former Doctor Who actor, Alonso. He’ll be leading alongside Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who also appeared in the show early in her career, though in a supporting role.
The new spinoff is being promoted as something brief, but the creator clarified that it tells a complete, self-contained story with a definite ending. They urged viewers to watch all the way through the credits, teasing that something important happens even after the story seems to finish – it’s not a typical post-credits scene with a character appearance, but rather a continuation of the story woven into the credits themselves.
The creator said it features a truly impactful conclusion and one of the most incredible performances from the cast you’ll ever witness.
The War Between the Land and the Seas will premiere on the BBC’s iPlayer and Disney+ on Dec. 7.
