I’ve always loved HBO Max for its amazing shows and movies, but I was really surprised to see them pick up a movie that totally flopped in theaters last year. While they’re famous for their original series and classic HBO shows, HBO Max actually has a huge library of everything – old favorites and new releases. It’s interesting how quickly movies end up on streaming services; sometimes it’s fast, sometimes not, and it really depends on the studio and how well the movie did in cinemas.
Despite being a major box office disappointment – marking Mel Gibson’s lowest opening in three decades – the action film Flight Risk, starring Mark Wahlberg, has found surprising success on HBO Max. The movie follows a pilot (Wahlberg) flying a US Marshall and a fugitive through the Alaskan wilderness. Since its release on the streaming platform, it has consistently been one of the most-watched titles.
Why Flight Risk Has Found Greater Success On HBO Max

Despite being a box office disappointment, the movie Flight Risk has surprisingly found success on streaming platforms. While it cost $25 million to make, it only earned $48.7 million in theaters and received mostly negative reviews, with critics finding it too simple and uninspired. However, its performance online suggests a different story.
While Flight Risk might not be known for its spectacular action, it delivers a gripping, tense experience that many viewers enjoy. Action and thriller movies generally do well on streaming services – people are often willing to watch even movies with mixed reviews from the comfort of their homes, rather than going to a theater. And Flight Risk‘s distinctive style seems to have made this effect even stronger.
Everyone’s been talking about Mark Wahlberg’s unusual haircut in Flight Risk, and it actually helped the movie get a lot of attention – the kind that often leads to success on streaming services. Because people already pay for their streaming subscriptions, they’re more likely to give a movie like Flight Risk a chance, even though it didn’t do well in theaters and received negative reviews. Luckily, it’s now finding an audience on HBO Max.
