Mia Goth recently shared her optimism about the upcoming Marvel movie starring Mahershala Ali, despite its uncertain future. Originally announced at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, the film about the vampire hunter has faced delays and is currently not listed among Marvel’s planned releases.
Javon Walton, who signed on to star in the Marvel film Blade in April 2023, recently discussed the project in an interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. While Walton admits she doesn’t know the latest details about the movie, she emphasized that Marvel Studios is really prioritizing it.
I’m not sure what the hold-up is with that project. It seems like they’re really dedicated to making it great, and it’s a significant film for them, so they’re being careful. Unfortunately, I don’t have any specific details about the delays, and I’m not sure why it’s taking so long. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
When discussing the upcoming Blade film, which is set in the 1920s, Goth shared that she went through initial steps like screen tests with potential co-stars and fittings for her costume. Unfortunately, the project didn’t move forward after that, as she explained.
I even auditioned for the role and went to Atlanta to do a chemistry read with Mahershala. We did costume and wig fittings, and I was really optimistic about how things were progressing – it felt very promising. Mahershala had a really unique and fantastic vision for the project. Sadly, it didn’t work out after that.
The Blade movie within the Marvel Cinematic Universe has gone through several changes during its development. Many writers, including Stacy Osei-Kuffour, Michael Starrbury, Nic Pizzolatto, Eric Pearson, and Michael Green, have contributed to the script. Additionally, Bassam Tariq and Yann Demange were both considered as directors, but ultimately moved on to other projects.
As of now, there’s no announced director for the Blade movie, and it’s still uncertain if the film will actually happen. However, Mahershala Ali’s recent comments are encouraging, suggesting Marvel is prioritizing quality over simply rushing the project into production and understands the importance of getting it right.
The upcoming Blade movie, similar to the earlier films with Wesley Snipes, is expected to be rated R. While most Marvel Cinematic Universe movies are PG-13, the big success of Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) – which featured Snipes reprising his role as the vampire hunter – shows that there’s an audience for superhero movies geared towards adults.
The next Blade movie is unlikely to be released before 2028, and even that depends on finishing the script and setting up filming soon. If it does happen, it would come out after the two upcoming Avengers films—Avengers: Doomsday (December 18, 2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars (December 17, 2027).
As the Marvel Cinematic Universe approaches a significant turning point with Secret Wars, marking the end of the Multiverse Saga, it’s uncertain where the Blade movie fits into future plans. However, recent comments from Mahershala Ali suggest the project isn’t completely abandoned, offering a glimmer of hope despite its past difficulties.
