After their first date, Colin Jost thought Scarlett Johansson just wasn’t that into him. 

The Black Widow actress confessed she hid her real emotions when she first met the Saturday Night Live comedian, explaining she felt very uncomfortable and out of place.

Scarlett recently shared on Today that she’d never actually been asked out on a date before. She explained that she always jumped from one serious relationship to another, but never experienced the typical ‘dinner invitation’ approach to starting a relationship.

When the host of Pop Culture Jeopardy! attempted a shot, Scarlett—who has an 11-year-old daughter, Rose, with her ex-husband, Romain Dauriac, and a 4-year-old son, Cosmo, with Colin—acted as if he completely missed.

Scarlett remembered him asking her out. They had a really nice date at an Italian restaurant in the East Village, where they enjoyed dinner. Afterwards, he suggested getting drinks with friends, but since Scarlett hadn’t really dated before, she felt she needed to end the date and went home.

The 41-year-old, who later married Colin in 2020, ended the evening after just an hour and a half.

I rushed home to take over from the babysitter, and she asked why I was there so unexpectedly. I was completely thrown off and didn’t have an answer. I realized I’d given my now-husband the wrong idea. He later told me he thought our relationship was ending because I was acting so strangely. I was really panicked and didn’t know what to say.

Colin recalled being immediately struck by Scarlett when they first met on the set of Saturday Night Live in 2006. He described her as beautiful, intelligent, kind, and impressively polished.

I remember when I first met her – she was just twenty, and I was twenty-three. But looking back, she was so much further along, so much more put-together, while I… well, I was still figuring things out. As she recalls it, she thought I was ‘cute,’ which always makes me laugh. I have a pretty good idea of what I looked like back then, and ‘cute’ definitely wasn’t it! ‘Shaggy’ might have been a kind description, but honestly, ‘slovenly’ probably hit closer to the truth. That’s how I remember it, anyway, as I wrote in my memoir.

Oh my gosh, they just clicked instantly, you could tell! Colin has said it himself – after almost ten years together, he’s found someone he truly loves, someone he feels more at ease with than anyone in his life. It’s just so beautiful to see, honestly. They’re perfect for each other!
