Noriaki Okamura, producer of the Metal Gear series, recently mentioned that a remake of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is something he’d consider. In an interview with Real Sound (reported by GamesRadar), he also explained that the timing was right for the Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater remake, which came out earlier this year as Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. Okamura and director Yuji Korekado talked about how they aimed to honor the original game’s creators while updating it for today’s players.
Korekado explained that, with the series having a long history, they have a diverse fanbase. They were very careful to honor the original games while also making the remake appealing to modern players. While they wanted to stay true to the original creator’s vision, they also made some changes to improve the gameplay experience for today’s audiences, as certain elements might feel outdated.
Okamura talked about Hideo Kojima leaving Konami in 2015 and how that impacted the future of the Metal Gear series. He explained the challenges of continuing the series without its original creators, and emphasized the urgency of remaking a classic Metal Gear game before the number of developers familiar with the franchise dwindled.
It was tough deciding how to move forward with the series after the original team left,” Okamura said. “We kept going back and forth about creating something new. But considering our age and the fact that fewer and fewer developers understood the intricacies of Metal Gear, we felt it was now or never. The series is so special, so I made the decision to bring it back now.”
Regarding the future of the Metal Gear series, Okamura admitted the path forward isn’t entirely clear. While Konami and the team working on Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater are considering their next move, Okamura expressed hope for a remake of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, noting that the game has been largely unavailable since its original release on the PlayStation 3 in 2008.
Okamura explained that the older hardware required a very specific method to get 3D graphics working, and this led to some unusual coding in Metal Gear Solid 4. He believes updating the game for modern systems would be a significant undertaking.
Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater came out on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S in August. The game has received a lot of positive feedback, and you can read our full review for more information.
