How Billie Lourd Shares Carrie Fisher’s Star Wars Legacy With Her Kids

The force is always strong for Billie Lourd.

It’s been nearly nine years since actress Carrie Fisher passed away, and Billie Lourd has made it a point to ensure her children – 5-year-old son Kingston and 2-year-old daughter Jackson, whom she shares with husband Austen Rydell – know her as more than just their grandmother. Billie wants them to also know her as Princess Leia, the iconic character from Star Wars.

Billie recently shared a special experience with TopMob News. She showed her children Return of the Jedi for the first time, and they were initially puzzled. ‘They kept asking, ‘Is that my grandma?’ I had to explain, ‘No, that’s Princess Leia, your grandma is the actress Carrie Fisher, but that’s Princess Leia on screen!” Billie said. She was deeply moved watching them enjoy the film, and ended up crying from the back of the room.

She described her work as a really high-quality, personal home movie. Being able to create something like that and share it with her mother in the films was incredibly meaningful to her.

Billie jumped at the opportunity to become the face of Columbia Sportswear’s new Star Wars collection, The Endor Collection. The line features clothing inspired by the costumes and creatures from the forest planet in Return of the Jedi, and Billie said accepting the role was a quick and enthusiastic decision.

The photos will feel surreal for fans. Billie, with her hair styled in a braid, wears a poncho identical to the one Princess Leia wore in Jedi, and strikingly resembles her mother in a shot of them walking hand-in-hand with her children, seen from behind.

When asked about their favorite Star Wars character, Kingston and Jackson didn’t hesitate: Princess Leia! Though Billie’s character, Lieutenant Connix, is a possibility, Leia is definitely their top choice.

The campaign was filmed in the Redwoods, which were actually used as the forest moon of Endor in the original Star Wars movies. Plus, Kingston and Jackson were able to visit the set and even wear adorable Ewok costumes from the new collection!

Becoming a parent made the experience even more special,” she said. “Visiting the Redwoods with my children was incredibly moving – it was somewhere we’d never been as a family. My mom and I used to enjoy similar trips, and it felt like a gift from her, even after she was gone.

Billie also sent a gift in return, and thoughtfully included elements of Carrie’s style in her appearance for the campaign.

She described a special ring her mother wore frequently near the end of her life – a striking moonstone. She now wears the ring when she’s doing things that remind her of her mother, feeling a connection to her. Recently, while wearing it, she had a powerful and surreal experience, constantly touching and looking at the ring and the trees around her, feeling almost disconnected from her body.

When asked about their favorite Star Wars character, Kingston and Jackson didn’t hesitate – it’s Princess Leia! Although Billie plays Lieutenant Connix, Leia is the clear winner for this family.

Billie explained that her fans are really passionate collectors. She even has some dolls she prefers to keep unopened. She described how they sometimes ask why they can’t open the boxes, and she has to explain that some items are meant to stay sealed. To solve this, she often buys duplicates – one for them to play with and one to keep in perfect condition.

As she proudly put it, “They just love Star Wars.”
