Heavy is the head that wears the crown? Ask Kate Middleton.
Princess Kate sparkled at a state banquet at Windsor Castle on December 3rd, wearing a stunning, large tiara covered in diamonds. It was the first time she—or anyone—had worn the piece publicly in two decades.
Last night was truly special! I was so thrilled to see Kate absolutely radiant. She wore Queen Victoria’s Oriental Circlet Tiara – it’s a stunning piece originally created way back in 1853 by Prince Albert. Can you believe it’s set with over 2,600 diamonds in gold? Prince William was by her side, of course, and together they were a beautiful sight!
The 43-year-old wore a stunning blue Jenny Packham gown with a beautiful, royal tiara. She completed the look with diamond earrings originally owned by Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, along with the Royal Family Order and the Royal Victorian Order star.
Kate’s tiara has an interesting history. It was first created to hold over a dozen opals, but in 1901, Queen Alexandra – Queen Victoria’s daughter-in-law – had them replaced with rubies. The jeweler who made the tiara said this was because of old beliefs and superstitions about opals, which have a milky white appearance.
According to records from the jeweller Per Gerard & Co, Alexandra only wore the crown once, during a state visit to Germany. It was then passed down to the Queen Mother, and later to Queen Elizabeth II, who last wore it in 2005 during a trip to Malta.
Kate appeared to honor royal tradition by wearing the crown to the state dinner, where she and the royal family, including King Charles III and Queen Camilla, greeted German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

This wasn’t Kate’s only standout fashion moment of the year. She hadn’t worn a tiara in two years, but she made a glamorous return in July, sporting Queen Mary’s Lover’s Knot tiara at a state banquet honoring French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte.
Two months after that, the Princess of Wales, mother to Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, wore the same headband when she hosted President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump at Windsor Castle.
Kate has worn five different tiaras so far, such as the Cartier Halo tiara at her wedding in 2011, as well as the Lotus Flower and Strathmore Rose tiaras.
