Could Half-Life 3 actually be in development? It’s starting to seem possible, and for many gamers, that’s huge news. If you’re new to gaming, you might not realize just how important the Half-Life series is. The original Half-Life, a sci-fi action game from 1998, was groundbreaking for its storytelling and immersive gameplay. Then, Half-Life 2, released six years later, pushed boundaries even further with its innovative physics and engaging story. While the game received two follow-up episodes in 2006 and 2007, the last one ended on a frustrating cliffhanger.
Fans anticipated Half-Life 2: Episode 3 in the late 2000s, but Valve became less and less clear about its progress when asked. Eventually, they stopped mentioning it, leading many to believe the project was cancelled or had transformed into something entirely new. For the past twenty years, rumors about Half-Life 3 have circulated, but interest really spiked in 2020.
Evidence of Half-Life 3‘s Existence

In 2020, Valve released Half-Life: Alyx, a virtual reality game that takes place before Half-Life 2. It was the first new game in the Half-Life series in over ten years and featured a major plot twist. At the end of the game, the character Alyx meets the G-Man, who shows her a future where her father dies, as seen in Half-Life 2: Episode 2. He offers to prevent this if she helps him, but then freezes her in time, revealing his plan to use her for his own purposes.
The game begins with you taking control of Gordon Freeman, picking up right after the events of Episode 2. While Eli Vance is still alive, Alyx is missing, which deeply affects her father. He’s determined to find and eliminate the G-Man before giving Gordon his iconic crowbar. It’s clear this is all leading to a new game, and it appears Valve developed a strong concept that required them to alter established story elements, using the events of Alyx as a way to do so.
Valve has never officially announced that Half-Life 3 is being developed, but there’s a lot of evidence suggesting they might be. Starting in the early 2020s, Valve began hiring developers with extensive experience from well-known studios like Rockstar Games and Naughty Dog. These included skilled designers and programmers – the kind of team you’d assemble for a major new game, which Valve hasn’t released in some time. While they did create Deadlock, the caliber of people they were hiring hinted at a much more ambitious project.
This explains a lot. After releasing Dota 2 in 2013, Valve significantly slowed down its large-scale game development. They released a few smaller games, like Artifact, and experimented with some tech demos, but nothing compared to their previous hits like Half-Life, Portal, or Left 4 Dead. Many projects started in the 2010s, but ultimately didn’t get finished – they just fizzled out. However, Half-Life: Alyx re-energized the talented team at Valve. It wasn’t just about creating another innovative game; it was specifically about making a new Half-Life game, and the team genuinely enjoyed the process – they weren’t just doing it because fans expected it.

The release of Half-Life: Alyx sparked hope for the future of the series. Valve team members, including designer Robin Walker and programmer Kerry Davis, playfully suggested in an interview with VGC that the next Half-Life game wouldn’t take another 13 years to develop. Writer Erik Wolpaw also mentioned that there were ideas for a character introduced in Alyx who helped the Combine, but wasn’t fully shown. Back in 2020, Wolpaw described the VR game’s ending as a hint of future installments and said he was actively pushing for them to happen.
According to the behind-the-scenes book for Half-Life: Alyx, called The Final Hours, the developers at Valve were actually hoping their next major game would be a traditional Half-Life title available on all platforms, rather than just VR. They worried, though, whether Valve would commit the necessary resources. Despite these concerns, designer Phil Co confidently stated in the book, “We’re not afraid of Half-Life anymore.”
In 2021, IGN asked Valve’s Gabe Newell what he thought of the ending of Alyx, and he said it fit perfectly with the company’s future plans. It appears everyone involved wants to create Half-Life 3, and it might actually be happening! In 2022, Valve’s Greg Coomer mentioned several promising games were in development. While we now know about Deadlock and Counter-Strike 2, Valve hasn’t announced any other projects yet.
For several years, rumors have been circulating thanks to dedicated fans who’ve been meticulously searching through Valve’s files. They’ve uncovered numerous hints about a new project, internally known as HLX. Given that ‘HL’ likely stands for ‘Half-Life,’ most people believe this refers to Half-Life 3. These clues first appeared in October 2020, roughly seven months after the release of Alyx.
Okay, so some stuff has been discovered in the game files and honestly, it’s got us fans buzzing! We’re starting to think we might see things like dynamic weather and smarter AI, and a whole bunch of other improvements. Some of the data even hints at where we’ll be going in the game, but there’s one thing in there that’s a major spoiler, so I’m staying tight-lipped about that. I won’t pretend I understand all the technical stuff, but it looks like a lot of this data is completely new and not used in any other Valve games, which is super exciting!
Reliable sources within the gaming community, like GabeFollower, are reporting that Half-Life 3 began playtesting in late 2024, hinting that the game is nearing completion. This news was quickly followed by a cryptic New Year’s Eve message from Mike Shapiro, the actor who plays G-Man. Using the character’s signature unsettling voice, Shapiro alluded to a surprising reveal coming in 2025.
When Will Half-Life 3 Be Announced?

What does all this mean for fans? There’s been a lot of talk about a potential announcement for Half-Life 3 this month. Valve recently revealed its new Steam Machine, which is scheduled to launch in early 2026. Many believe Valve will release it alongside a new game, just like they did with Half-Life: Alyx when the Valve Index came out. If an announcement is going to happen, most people expect it to be at The Game Awards on December 11th.
As a big fan, I always knew Geoff Keighley had a special connection with Valve. He actually got to visit them while they were finishing up Half-Life and did a cool feature about the studio back then. Because of that relationship, he’s gotten some unique access over the years, even quietly working on a behind-the-scenes book for Half-Life: Alyx that came out with the game. It was supposed to be revealed at The Game Awards, but Valve surprisingly decided to hold off at the last minute.
Geoff Keighley seems incredibly determined to announce Half-Life 3 at his upcoming show. Valve essentially owes him one, considering they previously pulled a reveal and they have a good working relationship. Several industry insiders, including Mike Straw from Insider Gaming, believe Valve has another major announcement planned this year, beyond just hardware releases. If these reports are accurate, it suggests Half-Life 3 could be revealed this year. However, there’s a lot of debate about the timing, and some speculate Valve is deliberately giving employees conflicting information to identify potential leakers.
Tyler McVicker, who creates content about Valve games, recently shared a rumor that a trailer for Half-Life 3 is currently being made. He seems hopeful that an announcement is coming soon, but advises fans not to get too excited. While some game companies hire external studios to make trailers, it’s unknown if Valve will do the same. Other companies, like Rockstar, prefer to create trailers internally to prevent leaks.
Honestly, we don’t know for sure if anything will come of this, but it’s the strongest indication we’ve seen in years that Half-Life 3 might actually be in development. Even if an announcement doesn’t happen right now, it seems likely the game is being worked on and will eventually be released.
