It’s not been an easy generation for console manufacturers like PlayStation.
Sony has faced a series of challenges recently, starting with disruptions caused by the coronavirus pandemic and its effect on getting parts. On top of that, the company has been dealing with increasing costs for components and tariffs imposed by the United States. Now, a shortage of RAM is adding to these difficulties.
Although reports suggest the company has secured enough components to maintain the PlayStation 5’s price for now, it seems a parts shortage will ultimately affect all manufacturers.
Okay, so this is kinda big news. Micron just announced they’re stopping sales of RAM and memory directly to us gamers and PC builders by the end of February 2026. Apparently, they’re shifting all their focus to supplying memory for those huge AI data centers instead. Basically, they’re prioritizing AI over us, which… yeah. It means finding RAM might get a little trickier down the line, and probably more expensive too.
Prices for computer components have been rising, especially since OpenAI started making deals with companies like Samsung to secure a large portion – 40% – of the world’s RAM supply. This means consumers will likely have fewer choices and higher costs.
This is the announcement Micron’s Executive Vice President and Chief Business Officer, Sumit Sadana, made regarding their decision.
The increasing use of artificial intelligence is driving up demand for data center memory and storage. Because of this, Micron is discontinuing its Crucial consumer business to better serve its biggest customers and focus on faster-growing areas. Crucial has earned a strong reputation for high-quality, reliable memory and storage, thanks to its loyal customers. Micron expresses its gratitude to the millions of customers, partners, and employees who have supported the Crucial brand over the past 29 years.
Rising costs will probably affect consumers who buy PCs the most, but Sony will definitely feel the impact as well.
Being a large manufacturer gives the company an edge over typical customers because they can purchase parts in large quantities, reducing costs. However, this also presents another potential problem for the PS6.
Looking at price history over the last year and a half, RAM prices have increased dramatically in the last couple of months – a change that seemed impossible just recently.
And announcements like this from Micron aren’t going to help.
