Murderbot Finale Shocker: Why SecUnit Walks Away From the Preservation Alliance

In the final episode of Apple TV+’s Murderbot, we discovered the reason why the SecUnit felt compelled to break away from the Preservation Alliance and embark on a new journey. Following Dr. Mensah’s team successfully restoring Murderbot’s memories, the construct robot chose to depart from the Preservation Alliance in search of an autonomous future.

As I reflect upon Alexander Skarsgård’s character-driven odyssey, it’s clear that he stands at a pivotal crossroads, where his choices will transcend the limitations set by the Alliance. The climactic conclusion tantalizingly opens up exciting avenues for the SecUnit’s upcoming journey, leaving me eager to see what lies ahead in its next chapter.

Why does SecUnit leave Preservation Alliance in Murderbot’s Ending?

In the final episode of Murderbot, it was evident why viewers had always perceived SecUnit as having human-like qualities. Towards the end, SecUnit’s memories were wiped out, but through the diligence of the Preservation Alliance and Gurathin’s technical skills, they were successfully restored.

After Murderbot restores its memory, Mensah and her group explain to the security unit that they’re considering a fresh contract for the bot. This means the SecUnit won’t have to function as PressAux’s security unit any longer. Instead, it can simply be another unit, harmoniously living among all other team members.

Although the Preservation Alliance had a strong plan, Murderbot slipped away from their residence at night and embarked on an uncertain adventure. As it moved forward, we learn about the reasons that drove the SecUnit to separate itself from Mensah’s group.

To strive for being more compassionate and autonomous, Murderbot refuses to live a life dictated by others’ desires. In simpler terms, the bot expresses, “I’m not sure about my own desires. But one thing I do know is that I don’t want anyone else telling me what they are.

How did Preservation Alliance restore SecUnit?

The Preservation Alliance’s expert, Gurathin, managed to recover Murderbot’s lost memories by outsmarting its previous owner, Landers, and gaining access to the system of Corporate Rim. Although many of SecUnit’s files are secured with encryption, Gurathin recalled a crucial aspect of Murderbot’s memory that distinguishes it from other similar robots.

Whilst scouring the records in Corporate Rim’s database, Gurathin looked for Murderbot’s preferred series, Sanctuary Moon. He managed to gather all the necessary information from the data he found. To restore Murderbot’s memories, he initially needed to download them into his own mind.

Upon returning to the temporary abode of the Preservation Alliance, his memory was transmitted via a cable, linking him with the Secunit.

At first, Gurathin and Murderbot didn’t have a particularly great bond in the Apple TV+ series. But by the end, Gurathin gained a fresh perspective. He came to see that Murderbot, similar to himself, was also subjected to exploitation by Corporate Rim. This realization signified a significant shift in their interactions.
