Windows 10 is dying on Steam — over 65% of gamers now use Windows 11 as Linux gains an ever-so-slight OS adoption bump

The latest Steam survey from November 2025 shows a predictable increase in Windows 11 users. With Windows 10 no longer supported, many users have been upgrading, resulting in a 2% gain for Windows 11 on the Steam platform.

Linux also saw a small increase in users, rising by 0.15%. This follows a milestone reached in October 2025 when Linux surpassed 3% of Steam users, now accounting for 3.20% overall. However, Windows still dominates with 94.79% of the user base, and Windows 11 is now used by 65.59% of Steam players.

What else does the Steam survey show?

The RTX 4060 mobile GPU is now the most common graphics card used by Steam users, with over 4% of players using it – likely boosted by good deals during Cyber Monday. Also, 8GB of VRAM is the most popular amount, used by nearly 33.4% of Steam users.

Today’s games use much more detailed graphics, which requires more video memory (VRAM). Because of this, 8GB of VRAM is now considered the standard for most games on Steam, as older graphics cards with less memory are starting to have trouble keeping up. In fact, Valve’s Steam Machine PC is designed with 8GB of VRAM as a minimum.

The RTX 4060 laptop is a smart choice when you look at the cost. Many of these laptops are actually less expensive than building a similar-performing desktop PC, making them a great way to boost your gaming or creative performance without a huge price increase.

Players are increasingly upgrading from older, entry-level graphics cards like the GTX 1650, leading to a decrease in their overall use.

The survey results suggest that most people favor laptops over traditional desktop computers, likely because of their portability. It appears laptop graphics cards are currently more popular.

Portable gaming is becoming increasingly popular, as evidenced by strong sales of devices like the Xbox Ally and Valve’s Steam Deck. Nintendo’s Switch has also been a huge success, selling over 100 million units, and early sales of the new Nintendo Switch 2 are already exceeding those of the original Switch.
