Helen Mirren and Lesley Manville among acting legends confirmed for batch of acclaimed live theatre broadcasts

In 2026, National Theatre Live will broadcast cinema events featuring acclaimed actors like Dame Helen Mirren, known for her role in The Thursday Murder Club, and Lesley Manville, famous from The Crown.

The shows, captured in front of a live audience, will be shown in cinemas across the UK.

Helen Mirren will reprise her acclaimed role as Queen Elizabeth II in the filmed version of ‘The Audience,’ a popular play that has won both Olivier and Tony Awards. The film will be shown in UK cinemas starting February 26th, marking its return to the big screen after more than ten years.

Directed by Stephen Daldry and written by Peter Morgan, The Audience focuses on the weekly meetings between Queen Elizabeth II and her prime ministers. This play served as the basis for the popular Netflix series The Crown, which was also written by Morgan.

Starting May 28th, moviegoers can enjoy a film adaptation of John Millington Synge’s The Playboy of the Western World, directed by Caitriona McLaughlin, the Artistic Director of the Abbey Theatre. The film stars Nicola Coughlan (known from Bridgerton), Éanna Hardwicke (Saipan), and Siobhán McSweeney (Derry Girls).

The show will be filmed during its performances at the Lyttelton Theatre, where it’s scheduled to run until February 28th.

I’m really excited to hear that Manville is joining Aidan Turner and Monica Barbaro in a new production of ‘Les Liaisons Dangereuses’! It’s based on Christopher Hampton’s adaptation, and it’s starting on June 25th. I’m a big fan of all three actors, so I’m definitely looking forward to seeing this.

The play centers on Marquise de Merteuil, a skilled survivor, and her partnership with the charming Vicomte de Valmont. Together, they use seduction as a calculated strategy, turning desire into a powerful tool. However, their alliance eventually crumbles into a fierce rivalry, and their conflict puts everyone around them at risk.

The performance will be filmed during its run at the Lyttelton Theatre, from March 21st to June 6th.

I’m so excited to hear about even more National Theatre Live showings! They’re adding three new productions to the lineup, alongside the already announced Hamlet which was filmed earlier this year. Hamlet will be the first one shown in cinemas on January 22nd, 2026, kicking off the whole season.

According to Matt Risley, Head of Digital at the National Theatre, NT Live has had a remarkably successful year, with over 1.2 million people attending screenings of their six releases globally. He anticipates continued success in 2026, emphasizing that the theatre prioritizes audience enjoyment when planning future programs and expects the upcoming slate to appeal to viewers worldwide.

He added that they were thrilled to be bringing back “The Audience” to the UK after more than a decade, as fans had often requested it. This is alongside two of the most exciting new shows from the National Theatre’s upcoming season.
