The new Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, might not deliver on a promise Marvel made about keeping future films more grounded. Marvel’s recent movies have been increasingly large in scope – The Fantastic Four: First Steps featured a powerful, world-threatening villain, and even The Thunderbolts relied on a huge power-up from a powerful character. The last Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man: No Way Home, also went bigger than usual by introducing the multiverse and magic. Marvel said Brand New Day would be a return to smaller, more personal stories, but it now seems like that might not happen.
Recent news about the upcoming Spider-Man 4 suggests it might become just another big-budget superhero film, potentially losing what makes it special.
Spider-Man Promised to Be a Ground-Level Superhero Movie
With Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Marvel Studios aimed to refocus the character on more personal, local stories. The plan was to bring Spider-Man back to his roots as a street-level hero, fighting classic villains in New York City. They wanted to avoid large-scale magical threats or team-ups with other heroes, and instead concentrate on the core elements of Spider-Man’s world.
The plan was to focus Spider-Man on fighting typical street-level criminals, like those found in his comics – specifically, the mobsters trying to control the city. The comics showed that when Kingpin rose to power and became mayor, smaller crime bosses battled for dominance, and that seemed to be the direction this story was taking, with villains like Tombstone, Boomerang, and Scorpion potentially involved. Even someone as powerful as Mister Negative was considered, but he still represented a manageable threat for Spider-Man. The story would avoid complex multiverse plots and instead concentrate on Spider-Man protecting the people of New York City.
While the idea of a new Spider-Man movie sounds exciting, it appears the Marvel Cinematic Universe is leaning towards a larger-scale story, potentially abandoning the original plan for a more grounded, street-level adventure. The initial concept focused on Spider-Man being caught in a local gang war, facing villains like Scorpion and lesser-known characters from the comics, such as Boomerang. However, the movie now seems to be expanding beyond that, potentially becoming another overly ambitious MCU film.
Hulk & Connection to MCU Threaten to Ruin the Promise

The plan for a smaller, more grounded Spider-Man movie hit a snag when Marvel announced Hulk would be included. A fight between Spider-Man and Hulk doesn’t fit a simple, street-level story. If Hulk loses control, as reports suggest, he’ll steal the show and overshadow Spider-Man’s role. The focus after the movie shouldn’t be on a rampaging Hulk, but on Spider-Man’s actions.
While the potential appearance of the Punisher is a bit worrying, it’s not as big of a concern as other issues. It’s interesting to see a character who originated in Spider-Man’s comics possibly return, but it could also distract from Spider-Man’s story. With the Punisher’s recent popularity from shows like Daredevil: Born Again and his previous Netflix appearances, he might end up being the focus of attention instead of Spider-Man, which wouldn’t be ideal.
The concept behind Brand New Day is already concerning, given that it’s named after the event immediately following the highly disliked One More Day storyline. While the ending of No Way Home mirrored this, Doctor Strange helped Peter Parker instead of the villain Mephisto. Still, completely restarting Spider-Man’s world without his established friends and supporting characters from the recent films is a risky move. Focusing on smaller-scale threats like street-level criminals effectively showcases this new beginning, but introducing characters like Hulk and Punisher feels out of place and contradicts the idea of a more grounded story in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
