The new Elden Ring DLC, Forsaken Hallows, introduces two playable characters called Nightfarers. These characters offer unique gameplay experiences, so players may prefer one over the other. Fortunately, unlocking both is fairly simple, though it requires a few steps. To get started, you’ll need to purchase the $15 Forsaken Hallows DLC, which is available on Steam, PlayStation, and the Xbox Game Store.
How to Unlock Scholar and Undertaker in Elden Ring Nightreign
So, I finally jumped into the Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, and after beating the first big boss, Nightlord Tricephalos, I ran into this guy called the Iron Menial. He told me the little Jar Merchant had a message for me. I headed left of him, back to where the Jar Merchant usually hangs out in the Roundtable Hold, and talked to him. He pointed me towards a door, and when I opened it, all heck broke loose! I ended up in a fight with the Dredgelord, but thankfully the Scholar and Undertaker were already going at it. They didn’t last long, though – it was mostly up to me after that.

You don’t actually need to beat the boss to move forward in this area. There’s no special reward, like a Relic, for defeating it. Once the fight ends, you’ll see a short cutscene, and then you can enter the room where you’ll find the Scholar and the Undertaker.
Speaking with each character individually will unlock them for battles against the new Nightlords. A new Expedition called Balancers will become available, and a Shifting Earth Event, “The Great Hallow,” will begin. Once unlocked, the Sparring Grounds are a perfect place to try out these new characters and practice fighting the Nightfarer before tackling the Expedition. Both characters have distinct abilities, though the Undertaker is generally easier to learn than the Scholar.
