Kate Winslet’s Son Joe Anders Is All Grown Up in Rare Appearance

Kate Winslet’s little children are not so little anymore. 

The actress arrived at the London premiere of her new film, Goodbye June, on December 3rd with her 21-year-old son, Joe Anders, and her ex-husband, Sam Mendes.

Oh my gosh, did you see Kate out with her son? She looked absolutely incredible! It was this stunning black dress, so classic, but she totally made it her own with this amazing, bold gold belt. And the accessories! A gorgeous gold watch, a delicate necklace, and these beautiful, dangling earrings – it all just worked. Her hair was up in this simple, but elegant style, with these sweet little curls framing her face. Seriously, she’s flawless. I need that outfit in my life!

Standing beside her was Joe, dressed in a classic black suit and white shirt. He completed his look with a few rings and a silver wishbone necklace.

The film’s premiere was a special occasion for Kate, as she not only appears in Goodbye June, but also directed a new Christmas movie, marking her first time as a director.

The screenwriter is Joe, and Kate is incredibly proud of him, constantly praising her “wonderful, brilliant son.”

She told Jimmy Kimmel on his show on November 19th that he began writing this project when he was 19 years old. She added that he’d been writing his whole life, so it wasn’t unexpected that he’d want to try screenwriting.

Once Joe finished the script, he asked Kate – who has two children, 25-year-old Mia Threapleton with her ex-husband Jim Threapleton, and 11-year-old Bear Winslet with her husband Edward Abel Smith – if she’d take a look at it.

Kate remembered Joe telling her, ‘Even if it’s not good, just say it is.’ She thought it was a kind thing to say, and when she read what he’d written, she found it humorous, heartfelt, and honestly portrayed the complicated reality of family life. She told him she believed it had the potential to be a movie.

The Titanic actor also explained where the idea for the film came from. It tells the story of a family dealing with the loss of their mother, and he was inspired by a teacher who advised him to ‘write about your own experiences’.

She explained that the biggest emotional event in his life was the death of her mother – his grandmother – when he was a teenager. This loss deeply affected him and became the foundation of his emotional life.

Kate initially intended to simply act in and produce the movie, but when they started looking for a director, she realized she wanted to be more involved.

She explained that she realized she couldn’t hand the project over. She told him, ‘I’d really like to direct it myself.’ She felt that once a director takes on a project, it naturally becomes theirs, and that’s usually a good thing. However, she didn’t want him to lose his connection to it; she wanted him to still be involved.

She explained that she wanted him to witness the beautiful creation he’d made become a reality.
