Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans have enjoyed a resurgence of the franchise in recent years. The 2023 film, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, was a critical and commercial success, earning over $180 million globally and becoming the best-reviewed movie in the series. Alongside the film and its related TV show, and with plenty of new toys available, fans were thrilled. However, things became uncertain when Skydance Media acquired Paramount and began altering the future plans for the franchise.
As a lifelong Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fan, I’m used to seeing the franchise get reimagined – honestly, it feels like every few years we’re getting a new take! Everyone has their favorite version, that’s just how it is with the Turtles. But even I was surprised by the recent news. Paramount cancelled the Mutant Mayhem spinoff show, and then announced another live-action TMNT movie that’s clearly trying to follow the success of Sonic the Hedgehog. It’s got me wondering, is the franchise struggling? And are we really getting another reboot?
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Franchise Plans Become More Clear
Recent news has understandably worried fans of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles about the future of the series, especially because the studio hasn’t shared many details. Many wondered if the planned sequel to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem would be cancelled in favor of the new live-action movie, or if the series was heading for another reboot despite doing well. Now we have an answer. Jeff Rowe, the director of Mutant Mayhem and the upcoming sequel, recently spoke with io9 and confirmed that the new plans from Paramount don’t seem to be affecting his movie. It looks like both projects might be able to move forward together.
Rowe stated that he hasn’t received any official information yet. He believes we’re entering an era where different versions of the same story can exist side-by-side, pointing to the past when both live-action Spider-Man films and Spider-Verse were in production concurrently. He expressed his enthusiasm for the characters and welcomes any new interpretations of the franchise that creators want to explore.
Rowe makes a good point: Spider-Man: Enter the Spider-Verse came out between the first two Tom Holland Spider-Man movies, and all three were hits. This isn’t new for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, though. The original live-action TMNT films of the 1990s were released while the animated series was still making new episodes, and the same thing happened with the reboot films and even the 2007 animated movie.
Previously, all Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies and TV shows were separate projects. The upcoming sequel to Mutant Mayhem and the new live-action/CGI films mark the first time the franchise has had different movie continuities running at the same time. Luckily, audiences don’t seem to mind and can easily distinguish between animated and live-action versions – as Disney knows, with the success of both the animated Moana II and the upcoming live-action Moana movie.
Now that we know about the next Mutant Mayhem movie and a new live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film, people are wondering if the animated series will continue after the sequel. It might not, especially considering the animated movie is planned for September 17, 2027, and the live-action film follows a year later on November 17, 2028. It’s hard to say for sure, as Hollywood plans often change, and a lot can happen in three years.
