Vin Diesel’s Next Big Movie Franchise Gets a Worrying Update (Will It Actually Happen?)

Vin Diesel is a global star known for building popular movie franchises. His Fast Saga series has been hugely successful for years, and Guardians of the Galaxy has become a defining series for a whole generation, much like Star Wars was for others. He even found a dedicated fanbase with the Pitch Black/Riddick films. However, not all of his movie ideas come to life, or succeed when they do. Recently, there’s been an update on a project Vin Diesel has been trying to get made for a long time, and it’s a pretty intriguing one.

Recent reports indicate Vin Diesel will now be writing the screenplay for the Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots movie, in addition to his existing roles as star and producer. This makes him fully involved in the project – handling writing, acting, and producing – which is a significant commitment for any major film.

Vin Diesel has been working on a movie based on the classic toy Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots since 2021, through his production company, One Race Films. Samantha Vincent from One Race will help produce the film, alongside Darian Greenbaum and Andrew Scannell from Mattel Studios. Diesel recently stated he’s thrilled to bring this childhood favorite to a new generation, telling a story about competition, strength, and the surprising power of compassion.

Vin Diesel received a strong endorsement from Robbie Brenner, head of content at Mattel Studios. Brenner praised Diesel as a gifted storyteller with a unique ability to blend action, emotion, and immersive worlds. She highlighted his vision for the Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots movie as imaginative, character-driven, and cinematic – qualities Mattel Studios values highly.

Despite the announcement, it’s still uncertain whether a Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots movie will actually be made. Vin Diesel’s involvement with the script doesn’t guarantee it will be good. While Diesel has directed and written before – most notably the 1997 film Strays, which he wrote, directed, and starred in – his experience is limited. He also co-wrote and directed Los Bandoleros, a short film that connects the storylines of Fast & Furious and Fast Five.

A movie based on Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots hasn’t generated much excitement, largely because the 2011 film Real Steel already explored similar themes. Directed by Shawn Levy (who later directed Deadpool & Wolverine), Real Steel starred Hugh Jackman as a down-on-his-luck boxer who finds a new purpose – and a way to connect with his son – through robot boxing. Levy gained a larger following after the Night at the Museum films thanks to Real Steel’s blend of heartfelt family story and impressive sci-fi action. Since then, it’s been difficult to envision what a Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots movie could bring to the table, especially considering the original game isn’t as popular now as it was during Vin Diesel’s childhood.
