The film Dreamers tackles the complex issue of immigration by focusing on the personal story of Isio, a Nigerian woman arrested for working illegally and held in a detention center. Life inside is harsh, filled with bullying, so Isio keeps to herself until she forms a cautious friendship with her roommate, Farah. This bond deepens into a romance, and together they begin to plot an escape.
I just finished watching ‘Dreamers,’ and it really stuck with me. Joy Gharoru-Akpojotor didn’t pull any punches showing what life is like in detention centres. It’s not a movie trying to make a political statement, though – it’s much more about the people caught in the system and their struggles. My only slight disappointment was that, at 75 minutes, some of the characters felt a little underdeveloped, and a few of the supporting roles were a bit one-dimensional. However, the chemistry between the two main actors was fantastic! The film unfolds at a slow pace, which actually worked in its favour, allowing you to really feel Isio’s desperate hope for asylum, even if it felt a little naive at times. It’s a really moving and nuanced piece.
