A second season of Star Wars: Ahsoka is being made, but it will likely be quite different from the first. The way shows are produced for streaming is changing, and Ahsoka Season 2 will be one of the first major examples of this shift. Disney and Lucasfilm are reportedly being much more careful with their spending, significantly reducing the budget for the new season to minimize financial risk.
It’s difficult to get a clear picture of how streaming services work financially, so understanding what’s happening with the production of Ahsoka Season 2 would be nearly impossible without direct information from people involved.
Claudia Black played Klothow, a powerful witch, in the first season of Ahsoka. Klothow was one of three Nightsisters who aided Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen). They helped Thrawn stay alive after becoming stranded in a distant galaxy on the planet Peridea, and even assisted him in building an army of undead Stormtroopers so he could return to the core Star Wars galaxy as an invading force. Unfortunately, Claudia Black wasn’t asked to return for Season 2, reportedly due to budget cuts by Disney and Lucasfilm.
I was brought back for the second season of the show, but Disney wasn’t able to meet my financial needs. As a single mother living in Los Angeles, I had responsibilities that required a certain income, and the show was filming in London. Unfortunately, they couldn’t make it work, so I had to leave the show after season one.
It’s understandable that Disney and Lucasfilm might have looked for ways to save money on Claudia Black’s role. The character Klothow requires extensive makeup and costuming, meaning the actor’s visibility isn’t a major factor. A less expensive actor could easily play the part, similar to how the role of Baylan Skoll was recast after Ray Stevenson’s passing. However, there’s currently no indication that Klothow or the Nightsisters will have a significant role in the Ahsoka series moving forward.
Star Wars Actor Confirms Streaming Content Cutbacks At Disney
Claudia Black recently pointed out something many have noticed: Disney and Lucasfilm are making shows differently now. This change comes after a period of heavy investment in streaming during the early 2020s, often called the “Streaming Wars,” which has now scaled back. Star Wars, in particular, illustrates the risks of this approach. While releasing films occasionally built anticipation, Disney+ led to a flood of Star Wars TV shows – including The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, Obi-Wan, The Acolyte, Visions, Andor, and Tales of the Jedi/Dark Side/Underworld – and the quality hasn’t been as consistently high as the original films.
It appears the studio is currently focusing on essential projects while cutting back on spending. Season 2 of Ahsoka is crucial because it will significantly impact the overall Star Wars story being told on television. Dave Filoni, the creator of both The Mandalorian and Ahsoka, is developing a large-scale movie set during the New Republic era—the same period as the shows. Season 2 of Ahsoka will focus on important characters like Ezra Bridger, Thrawn, and Sabine Wren, developing their storylines to properly set up this upcoming movie. Ultimately, this content was a necessary investment for Disney.
Ahsoka Season 2 is in production and will be released in 2026.
