Daniel Radcliffe Revealed The ‘Only’ Piece Of Advice He Gave Tom Felton As He Prepared To Play Draco On Broadway

The Harry Potter films continue to be incredibly popular, and many fans still enjoy watching them on HBO Max. Because of this, the actors who played the characters – like Daniel Radcliffe and Tom Felton – are still strongly associated with their roles. Felton recently reprised his role as Draco Malfoy in the Broadway play The Cursed Child, and Daniel Radcliffe offered him advice about performing on Broadway.

Fans were thrilled to see Felton and Radcliffe together again! Though they’d already been in touch, Felton, with experience from six Broadway shows, offered some helpful advice. Radcliffe recently told Us Weekly about the guidance he gave his former co-star.

I only told him about something we don’t really do in the UK, so I wasn’t sure if he’d be familiar with it: applause as people enter the stage. I said, ‘The crowd is going to go wild when you first walk out there!’

He’s right. Big Broadway stars often get applause just as they walk on stage, with the audience cheering before they even begin speaking. Daniel Radcliffe, having experienced this throughout his stage career thanks to his popularity from Harry Potter, wanted to ensure the actor playing Draco Malfoy wasn’t thrown off by it during The Cursed Child.

It seems his advice was perfectly right. A video from Tom Felton’s first Broadway performance shows the audience was incredibly excited when he first appeared as his well-known character. I imagine the same enthusiastic reaction continues even now, weeks into his run in the Harry Potter stage play.

HBO Max subscriptions begin at $10.99 per month. It’s the place to stream everything from the Harry Potter universe, plus thousands of other movies, shows, and documentaries. See the deal here.

Daniel Radcliffe wanted to share an important message with his Harry Potter colleague, Tom Felton, even though their demanding schedules didn’t allow them to connect face-to-face before Felton’s Broadway premiere in November. In the same interview, Radcliffe explained how much he valued Felton’s advice, stating:

We’d been trying to connect for a while, but hadn’t managed to, so I decided to send him a voice message. I figured he might not have been told, and I wanted to prepare him. I told him not to be surprised if the audience goes wild when he first walks on stage – I wanted to give him a heads-up.

I remember a lot of excitement during the show! When Felton first came on as Draco, the audience went wild, but I figured people probably cheer at every performance. Thankfully, someone warned him beforehand, so he didn’t break character, even with all the screaming and applause. He really stayed in the moment, which was awesome to see.

You can watch all the Wizarding World films on HBO Max. Plus, Tom Felton is currently performing in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway through May 10th. And good news for fans – a Harry Potter TV series is being filmed and is expected to premiere around 2027.
