Stranger Things: There’s Still One Major Unanswered Question About Vecna (& It’s The Key To His Powers)

The show Stranger Things is keeping a major secret about Vecna that could completely change how we understand the story. Vecna, whose real name is Henry Creel, was actually the very first child brought to Hawkins Lab by Dr. Brenner. He was incredibly violent and showed no regret for his killings. It took Eleven’s powers to stop him, and she ultimately sent him to the Upside Down, also erasing her own memories of what happened.

The fifth and final season of Stranger Things will heavily focus on Vecna as the source of all the problems in Hawkins, leading to a huge showdown that will conclude the popular Netflix series. The creators, the Duffer Brothers, have hinted at revealing more secrets, and fans are eager to learn the full story behind the Upside Down. Interestingly, even after the first part of Season 5, Vecna remains a central mystery.

We Don’t Actually Know Vecna’s Full Origin Story

It might seem like we already know everything about Vecna, especially since the show has explored his past through flashbacks. These flashbacks showed us Henry Creel’s childhood and how his cruelty grew, eventually leading him to kill his mother and sister and falsely accuse his father. However, Henry’s plans were thwarted when his parents warned Dr. Brenner about his disturbing behavior. Brenner recognized Henry’s potential and made him the first subject of experiments at Hawkins Lab.

We’ve now seen Vecna’s complete backstory, but one mystery remains: how did he originally get his powers? Eleven’s abilities were a result of experiments performed on her mother while she was pregnant. However, Henry’s family seemed perfectly ordinary, offering no explanation for how his powers developed on their own. It’s also notable that Henry’s powers didn’t begin to emerge until after his family moved to Hawkins.

What Is the True Source of Vecna’s Powers?

Season 4 of Stranger Things raised many questions, and viewers may not even realize how many remain unresolved. While Eleven’s powers are now understood, the source of Vecna’s abilities is still a mystery, even after seeing his backstory. One possibility is that he’s simply a mutant, which would fit with the show’s clear inspiration from X-Men. However, if Vecna is a mutant, it suggests similar powers could emerge in other children, meaning the events in Hawkins could happen again.

There’s also a chance Vecna’s powers aren’t his own. The Broadway play, The Last Shadow, suggested this with details that didn’t quite match Season 4, but Season 5 included references back to the play. This hints that Vecna might not be a reliable storyteller. According to The Last Shadow, Vecna gained his abilities from a mysterious energy source called “Dimension X,” and he’s actually being controlled by the Mind Flayer – or perhaps something even more sinister. If this is true, Stranger Things could still have one last big surprise for us.
