Last year was full of fantastic games, but one particularly good title didn’t get the attention it deserved. With major releases like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Starfield, and Baldur’s Gate 3, it’s easy for some games to get lost in the shuffle. Thankfully, positive reviews and players sharing their experiences can often bring overlooked games back into the spotlight. Hopefully, a game from Ubisoft will get that chance this month.
When Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora came out in December 2023, it didn’t make a huge splash. It was the sixth best-selling game that month in the US, but quickly dropped off the sales charts by March 2024. Reviews were fairly average, with a score of 72 on Metacritic. While I personally loved the game – I thought it beautifully captured the environmental message of the Avatar films and delivered exciting action – it seems many others didn’t give it a chance. I believe it might have done better if it had been released closer to the Avatar: The Way of Water movie in 2022. However, the game is about to get another opportunity to shine.
Why Now Is the Perfect Time to Play Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora

A major update has arrived for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, coinciding with the release of the new movie, Avatar: Fire and Ash. This update prepares players for the upcoming From the Ashes expansion, which introduces a new storyline centered around conflict with the Ash People – the villains of the film. Best of all, the update itself is free and includes two significant additions: a New Game+ mode for experienced players and the option to play in third-person.
When Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora was first announced as a first-person game, some players expressed a preference for a third-person perspective, feeling it would better suit the game’s world. Now, the game allows you to switch freely between first- and third-person views. Ubisoft has worked hard to add new animations and improve the controls and camera to make playing in third-person a great experience, even including unique finishing moves you can now fully see.
Creating a first-person mode in a game is a significant undertaking that fundamentally alters the gameplay experience. Mike York, a former Rockstar Games employee and YouTuber, recently explained that adding this feature to Grand Theft Auto V introduced numerous unexpected bugs and required extensive testing and polishing. While Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora likely faced a slightly different process due to its co-op play – meaning some character animations already existed – enabling players to experience the game from their own character’s perspective still demands considerable effort.
If you enjoyed Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, the New Game+ update gives you a great reason to play again. You can start a new game with all your previously earned skills and upgrades, letting you easily defeat enemies. Plus, the From the Ashes DLC is perfect for experienced players, especially those excited about the upcoming movie.
I’m a big fan of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. It’s a really immersive experience, letting you explore the beautiful world of Pandora, and the combat is fantastic. Playing as a Na’vi, you feel powerful towering over enemies, and the movement – jumping and sliding while using powerful guns – is exhilarating. Plus, the bow and arrow is incredibly satisfying, letting you take down enemies with piercing and explosive shots. It’s a really fun game to play, especially with a friend in co-op.
I definitely suggest trying out the new Frontiers of Pandora update, especially if it’s on sale with the new movie release. It’s great content, and you’ll also get to experience all the improvements and updates the game has received over the past two years. Plus, there’s more downloadable content available if you enjoy it!
