Five Nights At Freddy’s 2 Races Past Zootopia 2 With Record-Breaking Box Office Debut

Okay, so as a movie fan, I’m seeing some big numbers coming in! Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 totally blew past expectations and had a massive opening weekend. It actually outperformed Zootopia 2, which was already doing really well in its second week. Both movies came out around December 5th, but Freddy’s sequel really stole the show with its debut.

The new animated film earned $158.8 million in its first five days, making it the second-highest-grossing Thanksgiving opening weekend ever, only behind the 2024 film Moana 2. Experts predicted it would remain at No. 1 during its second weekend, thanks to its wide audience appeal (reflected in its A CinemaScore) and strong initial performance.

According to Deadline, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is now predicted to make $56.5 million domestically over its first three days in theaters. This is a significant increase from earlier estimates, which projected a debut of just $35 to $40 million as of Wednesday.

The movie has already exceeded expectations from Friday, which predicted a weekend gross of up to $45 million. Since that was the projected second-weekend total for Zootopia 2, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is now expected to easily be the top film during its opening weekend.

The $78.3 million opening for 2025’s Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is the biggest domestic debut ever for a film released on the first weekend of December. This is notable because December openings are usually slow, falling between the busier Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday releases.

Below, see the previous Top 5 best debuts for the first weekend of December:

Title Domestic Debut
Ocean’s Eleven (2001) $38.1 million
The Last Samurai (2003) $24.3 million
Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé (2023) $21.8 million
Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991) $18.2 million
Krampus (2015) $16.3 million

Even though the movie just had a record-breaking weekend, it earned just a little less than the first Five Nights at Freddy’s film did when it came out. The original earned $80 million, despite being available to stream on Peacock at the same time.

It’s still uncertain how well the sequel will ultimately perform by the end of the weekend. It has already surpassed expectations and could potentially close the gap with its predecessor even further. It’s worth noting that the original film had an exceptionally strong debut, representing one of Blumhouse’s most successful opening weekends ever.

Despite a reported production cost of $36 million, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 needs to earn around $90 million to become profitable. However, if it performs like the first movie, it could potentially make over $205.9 million in total, even if it only earns $56.5 million this weekend, easily exceeding the break-even point.

Movies released during the holidays usually maintain their popularity from week to week. This new film could follow that trend and avoid the large 76.2% drop in viewers that happened to the first movie after its opening weekend. If it does well, it could become the highest-grossing film in the series, which would likely lead to the quick approval of a third movie – something hinted at in the ending of Five Nights at Freddy’s 2.
