I’m a huge Stranger Things fan, and honestly, Eleven carries the whole show! Sure, the others in Hawkins try their best to investigate, but when it comes to actually fighting those monsters from the Upside Down, they’re just outmatched. They wouldn’t even know how to close those gates without her! But it’s more than just power with Eleven; she feels responsible for Vecna, since she was the one who initially sent him to the Upside Down. I think that’s why she’s so determined to take him down in Season 5 – she really wants to finally end this whole nightmare for everyone.
In the final season, Eleven takes matters into her own hands and enters the Upside Down to rescue Holly Wheeler, leaving her friends behind. Her timing is unfortunate, as Will Byers—the first victim of Vecna and a key figure in the show’s origins—unleashes a hidden power, destroying two Demogorgons. This display of power suggests there’s more to Will’s abilities than initially understood, and a subtle detail hints at a larger story.
Stranger Things Really Wants to Make the Hive Mind Happen

Will Byers’ experience in the Upside Down was deeply disturbing. Not only did he have to survive in a terrifying alternate dimension, but the trauma stayed with him long after he escaped, causing him ongoing fear. While a trip to California offered a brief escape in Season 4, the connection to the Upside Down returned as soon as he came home. By the end of the season, that connection was actually stronger than ever, as Vecna prepared to merge the Upside Down with the real world. Although Nancy and her friends stopped Vecna’s immediate plan, he still poses a threat to Will.
During the fifth season, Will unexpectedly finds himself at the center of the conflict, experiencing visions that lead him to a shocking discovery: he’s seeing events through the eyes of Vecna’s future victims. This connection reveals Will can somehow access Vecna’s mind, giving the group a crucial advantage. When another of their plans fails, Vecna is forced to retaliate, destroying a military base by stepping through the last open portal in Hawkins. He lets Will live, a decision that quickly proves to be a mistake. Being near Vecna seems to give Will some of his powers, though he’s unsure how. The show strongly hints that a major twist is coming, and isn’t trying to hide it.
Will Byers May Not Be an Extension of Vecna But Something Else

So far, the creators of the show, the Duffer brothers, are leading viewers to believe that Vecna and Will are connected. This makes it seem like Will might have to sacrifice himself to defeat Vecna. However, there’s another possibility: this connection could explain both Will’s unique abilities and why Vecna is so focused on him. In a recent conversation, Mike tries to reassure Will about his role in the fight, reminding him that he’s a powerful “Sorcerer.” This encouragement likely helps Will feel more confident and may even be contributing to the development of his powers.
The main issue with Mike’s theory is that, in Dungeons & Dragons, Sorcerers are born with magical abilities – they don’t gain them over time. Will’s situation is more like that of a “Warlock,” but the show doesn’t categorize him that way. It’s possible Will always had hidden potential, and Vecna discovered this, bringing him to the Upside Down to investigate. Given how secretive Vecna is, he’s likely still concealing Will’s true purpose, and this mystery might be the only thing protecting the boy.
