Some of Cartoon Network’s most talented creators have teamed up with Adult Swim for a unique holiday project, and a new trailer has just revealed The Elephant. Adult Swim has become known for surprising fans each year with unexpected holiday specials. In the past, this included special horror movie pairings with the Christmas season, and this year they’re debuting a brand new, one-of-a-kind animated special.

Three different teams each developed a portion of the story independently, without knowing what the other teams were creating. When Does The Elephant Come Out?
The new animated special, The Elephant, will debut on Adult Swim Friday, December 19th at 11:00 PM ET, and it will be shown without any commercials. You’ll also be able to stream it on HBO Max starting the next day. Adult Swim is also releasing a behind-the-scenes documentary called “Behind the Elephant” on December 20th, which will also be available on HBO Max, and will re-air at a later date. Even after watching the trailer, the story remains a bit of a mystery, as the three parts of the special seem very different from each other.
Adult Swim’s upcoming series, The Elephant, will be made up of three different parts. Rebecca Sugar, known for Steven Universe and Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars, and Ian Jones-Quartey, who created O.K. KO! Let’s Be Heroes, are working on one segment. Pendleton Ward, the creator of Adventure Time, is leading another, and Patrick McHale, who made Over the Garden Wall, is crafting the third. Interestingly, the creators didn’t collaborate directly. Instead, Jack Pendarvis and Kent Osborne, both veterans of Adventure Time, acted as coordinators, ensuring all three parts connect thematically.

Michael Ouweleen, president of Adult Swim, explained that the network aims to surprise its audience each year with something unexpected, and this year that’s ‘Adult Swim’s The Elephant.’ He added that the real joy of the project was bringing together a talented team and giving them a chance to continue their creative collaboration. He’s excited for viewers to experience the unique results of this experiment.
