Many Marvel heroes became who they are because of deeply sad and difficult pasts. While a lot of heroes have experienced hardship, some of Marvel’s most famous characters have particularly tragic stories. For example, Iron Man nearly died and had to build a life-saving device, and Captain America was frozen for decades before waking up in a new era. But others faced even greater loss, like the death of family members, or endured terrible experiments before becoming the heroes we know today.
From enduring heartbreaking losses to surviving years of torture and experimentation, these Marvel heroes have the most tragic pasts.
7) Spider-Man

Peter Parker was just a teenager when a radioactive spider gave him superpowers, transforming him into Spider-Man. Growing up without parents and often bullied, he relied on his Aunt May and Uncle Ben for support. But when he was still learning to control his abilities, a tragic event occurred: his Uncle Ben was killed, and Peter felt responsible. This loss deeply affected him and motivated him to become the hero he is known as today.
Spider-Man has faced an unbelievable amount of tragedy. He felt responsible for the deaths of many people close to him, including Gwen Stacy (killed by the Green Goblin), her father (who died during a fight with Doctor Octopus), his friend Jean DeWolffe, and his best friend, Harry Osborn. His life is arguably the most heartbreaking of any hero in Marvel Comics.
6) Daredevil

Daredevil is arguably the most guilt-ridden hero in Marvel comics, and it’s a burden he carries despite not being at fault for the tragedy that shaped his life. As a child, Matt Murdock’s father pushed him to succeed, but that future seemed lost when Matt, while saving someone from a car crash, was blinded by hazardous chemicals. Helpless and now unable to see, Matt could only listen as his father was murdered by criminals.
After losing his sight, Matt Murdock honed his other senses and became Daredevil, a hero protecting the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood. Like Spider-Man, he faced constant personal tragedy. He fell in love with Elektra, but she was tragically killed by Bullseye. He also had a past relationship with Karen Page, who unfortunately betrayed him to the Kingpin, leading to further suffering, and was later killed by Bullseye as well. Daredevil seems destined for hardship, and his history is filled with devastating losses.
5) Wolverine

Wolverine is a deeply tragic figure in the Marvel universe. Born in the late 1800s, he’s lived a long life marked by loss and pain, beginning with the murder of his father by Thomas Logan – an event that awakened his mutant abilities. Known as Logan, he struggled with his fading humanity while evading the authorities. His life took another dark turn when Sabretooth, his ultimate foe, killed the woman he loved, Silver Fox.
Logan’s life took a dark turn when he fell in love with Itsu and they had a child. Tragically, the villain Romulus killed Itsu and took their baby, Daken, though Logan didn’t discover Daken had survived for many years. Things worsened when the Weapon X program captured him, bonding his skeleton with Adamantium and erasing his memories, leaving him a wild animal. Eventually, he found a place with the X-Men after time with Department H and Alpha Flight, but his journey was marked by loss and hardship.
4) Cable

Nathan Summers, better known as Cable, faced a difficult beginning. Born to Scott Summers and Madelyne Pryor – who was created as a clone by the villain Mister Sinister – he was unfortunately infected with a dangerous techno-organic virus at birth. With no immediate cure available, his father made the heartbreaking decision to send him to the future, hoping doctors there could save him.
Sending Cable to the future proved to be a mistake. He landed on an Earth controlled by Apocalypse, forcing him to grow up as a fighter against this oppressive rule. When he eventually returned to his original timeline, Earth-616, Cable was a battle-hardened warrior, deeply affected by the difficult experiences of his youth.
3) Hulk

The Hulk’s story is deeply tragic. He became a monstrous figure while trying to protect someone from a dangerous gamma explosion, but that’s only part of his pain. His difficult childhood, marked by an abusive father, is actually the root of his anger and the reason Bruce Banner developed Dissociative Identity Disorder. The trauma he experienced as a child continues to haunt him.
Brian Banner was deeply abusive towards his son, Bruce, because Bruce was exceptionally intelligent, something Brian resented. Brian believed his work with gamma radiation had negatively affected Bruce, and saw Bruce’s intelligence as proof of this. His abuse was so severe that he killed Bruce’s mother when she tried to protect him, an event Bruce blocked from his memory. This trauma is the root of the Hulk’s intense anger, stemming from these deeply buried memories.
2) X-23

X-23 shares a difficult history with Wolverine, but her beginnings were arguably even more traumatic. Created as a clone of Logan, she’s essentially his ‘daughter,’ but unlike a naturally born mutant, she endured horrific torture during her development. This was all part of a plan to mold her into a perfect weapon and deadly assassin.
Scientists deliberately exposed Laura to radiation to activate her mutant abilities. When they felt she was losing her edge, they used a special scent to enrage her, tragically causing her to kill her closest friend – an event that deeply traumatized her. Sarah Kinney was the one person who helped her, ultimately aiding her escape from the facility. Laura then found Wolverine and sought refuge at the Xavier Institute, where she finally experienced a sense of safety.
1) Rocket Raccoon

Rocket Raccoon wasn’t always a wisecracking, gun-toting hero. He began as a normal boy named Rocket who was kidnapped and forced to live as a therapy animal in a mental institution. Scientists then experimented on him, enhancing his intelligence and giving him human-like qualities through robotic modifications, essentially turning him into the creature he is today.
The robots were incredibly harsh, inflicting painful and deeply upsetting procedures – using technology reminiscent of how the Kree created the Inhumans. These experiments resulted in Rocket’s current appearance. He then joined forces with his animal companions and together they broke free from the prison planet. It’s understandable why Rocket is often sad and uses humor as a coping mechanism.
