Where Tori Spelling Stands With Ex Dean McDermott After Their Divorce

Tori Spelling and ex-husband Dean McDermott are finding common ground.

Even though they officially divorced in November, the former couple remain close and continue to be a part of each other’s lives, something the Beverly Hills 90210 actress says she deeply appreciates.

She told People magazine that their family prioritizes spending time together, especially during dinner, which she believes is beneficial for their children.

After separating from Dean in 2023, the 52-year-old mother of Liam (18), Stella (17), Hattie (14), Finn (13), and Beau (8) expected a difficult divorce. However, she prioritized her children and was able to avoid a lot of conflict.

She described witnessing difficult divorces and realized it was strange, because despite creating a life together out of love, those separations were often painful. She was surprised her own divorce was actually quite smooth and amicable, especially considering how messy she’d always imagined it would be after reading about others’ experiences.

Tori recently shared how a question from one of her daughters influenced her decision to end her marriage. On her podcast, misSPELLING, in April, she remembered her daughter Hattie asking if she’d ever thought about being with someone other than her husband, and whether that person would treat her well.

You know, as I’ve seen in many families, even when there’s love between parents, a strained relationship can really affect the kids. Tori recognized that while her daughter still adored her dad, the issues she was having with him – he’s 59 – were starting to impact their children, and that’s something she needed to address.

She explained that their arguments had become so frequent and intense that it was more upsetting for their children to witness them staying together. They simply couldn’t conceal the conflict any longer.

Ultimately, the actress believed that getting a divorce was the best choice for all parties involved.

She explained that her desire to keep her children’s parents together – a common wish for kids – influenced her to stay in a relationship that, from an outside perspective, wasn’t the best choice.

They are definitely not getting back together. However, with all the recent interactions – birthday celebrations, affectionate hugs, and even playfully acting out a romantic scene in a virtual reading of Fast Times at Ridgemont High – it feels like they’re just teasing everyone who hoped they’d reconcile.

It takes a certain level of confidence to playfully tease your ex on his own show. That’s exactly what Sarah did when she appeared on Jimmy Kimmel’s talk show to promote her new series, I Love You, America. She jokingly referenced Jimmy’s wife, Molly Kimmel, saying, “It’s not fair! She gets the updated, more aware Jimmy. I only got the Jimmy from The Man Show.”

Honestly, some people seemed more upset about this relationship ending than the people who were actually in it. When Anna—who is now married to Michael Barrett—found out Chris Pratt was going to marry Katherine Schwarzenegger in 2019, she volunteered to perform the wedding ceremony. She even sent a gift when their daughter, Lyla, was born in August 2020. A source told TopMob News that Anna was “very supportive” and excited for her son, Jack, to have a little sister.

Their breakup could have easily led to disaster, but four years later, these HGTV stars are thriving. They’re successfully co-parenting their children, Taylor and Brayden, and continuing to renovate dilapidated houses into beautiful homes for others.

As Lenny Kravitz described it to Oprah Winfrey a few years ago, my ex and I – Zoe Kravitz’s parents – are still incredibly close, like best friends, really. We genuinely consider each other family. Even after our divorce and her marriage to Jason Momoa – and their subsequent split – we’ve maintained a really beautiful, supportive relationship. It just goes to show you that you can create a positive, blended family dynamic, even when life changes.

Since announcing their split in 2020, the Dancing With the Stars co-host and her ex-husband, a former hockey player, have consistently shown they remain friendly.

When Brooks announced he was getting engaged to Katrín Tanja Davíðsdóttir in December 2024, Julianne publicly shared her excitement. She posted on Instagram, wishing them both a future filled with love, happiness, and many adventures as they start this new chapter together.

Okay, so I was completely losing it when I saw this. Months after everything, she actually spent the day with him… and his pregnant fiancée! Can you believe it? She even posted a picture of them all together – her, him, and her – with the caption, ‘Special day on the lake with these three cuties.’ Like, three cuties?! It just… it doesn’t make any sense, but I’ve been screenshotting and analyzing it ever since. It’s both amazing and completely heartbreaking, honestly.

After separating in 2015, the parents of Violet, Seraphina, and Samuel have successfully co-parented, consistently prioritizing their children. They’ve continued to share vacations and holidays, and have even publicly praised each other – for example, Ben called his ex-partner “an amazing mother” in a 2016 interview with TopMob News.

Nina and Ian dated for three years before breaking up in 2013, but they stayed friends. The following year, Nina began dating Nikki Reed and quickly became close with her, as Nikki had recently married Ian.

The couple ended their five-year relationship in July 2016. The singer later shared on Howard Stern’s SiriusXM show the following October that she remained very close to her ex, stating he was both a longtime lover and friend.

“We love each other,” she said. “That’s it.”

Okay, seriously, Pam and Jim? Still get me right in the feels! Even Mindy Kaling totally understands why we’re all still hoping they’ll end up together, even years after the show ended. She actually said that if she didn’t know them, she’d be shipping them too! But the best part? She told Good Housekeeping that B.J. Novak – that’s Jim, obviously – isn’t just a friend anymore, he’s practically family! Like, he’s a godfather to her kids! It’s just… everything I ever wanted, honestly. They’re meant to be!

After their divorce was finalized in 2011, the former couple easily continued to raise their son, Bronx. The Fall Out Boy singer has praised his ex-wife, calling her a fantastic mother.

It sounds like she’s moved on from her past relationship with the singer. He recently stated they are on good terms and remain friendly, describing their connection as a positive one.

As someone who’s seen a lot of successful co-parenting relationships, Bruce Willis and Demi Moore really stand out. They’ve always prioritized their daughters – Rumer, Tallulah, and Scout – and that’s why it felt completely natural for them to quarantine together as a family in Idaho. Honestly, it sounds like they had a lot of fun – I’m picturing dance parties and a really supportive environment! It just goes to show what’s possible when you put your kids first, even after a split.

Even four years after their 2014 split, Jennifer Lopez continued to praise her ex-husband, Marc Anthony, the father of her twins, Max and Emme. In a 2018 interview on Sunday Today, she explained that Marc had been instrumental in boosting her confidence. He constantly reminded her of her talent, telling her, ‘You’re a great singer. Don’t ever let anybody tell you you’re not.’ She deeply respected him, considering him one of the greatest singers ever.

Honestly, even when things are really tough for him – like, a bad day, a bad week, even a whole year – I just know she’ll be there for him. It’s so sweet! She was on that show with Bear Grylls a while back, and she said their divorce was actually… good! Like, one of the better ones, which is amazing after everything. And the best part? They’re fantastic co-parents to little Coco. They really seem to make it work, and it just warms my heart to see!

Although their relationship ended in 2007, they still had great chemistry on screen when they starred in the 2011 film Bad Teacher.

Although their 2013 breakup was difficult at first, the actors have reached a point where they can vacation together as a group. The actor shared with LaPalme Magazine that he gets along well with his ex-wife’s husband, and he considers him a good person. He mentioned a 2017 trip to Cancun where they were joined by her husband, Dave Abrams, Peter’s fiancée Lily Anne Harrison, and their three daughters, Luca, Lola, and Fiona. He also reflected on his relationship with his ex-wife, telling the magazine that people enter your life for a reason and relationships evolve, adding that love can still exist even when a couple isn’t together.

Even though they unexpectedly separated in September 2012, the couple worked hard to appear supportive of each other for the sake of their children. In a 2014 interview with Howard Stern, she explained that she and Will remained close friends and were successfully co-parenting. She didn’t view their ten-year marriage as a failure, emphasizing that all relationships face challenges.
