Following recent layoffs at Eidos Montreal, information about projects the studio cancelled is starting to emerge. According to gaming insider Tom Henderson, one of these was a Lord of the Rings game that would have combined card-based gameplay with a story-driven experience similar to Telltale games. Henderson discussed this while explaining the reasons for the layoffs.
So, I was watching a video where Henderson explained the recent layoffs, and it seems like there are two main reasons. First, the team at Eidos Montreal is working on a really big new game! He described it as an open-world, third-person action-adventure title, and it’s being developed by the same people who made Shadow of the Tomb Raider, which is awesome. Apparently, they’ve been at it since 2019, and internally they call it ‘P11’ – it’s the eleventh project Eidos Montreal has had in development.
Henderson revealed that Eidos Montreal is currently on its 22nd project concept since 2019. Despite this, the studio has only released one game during that period – Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy in 2021. This suggests they’ve started and potentially abandoned around ten other projects without releasing a new game in over two years.
According to Henderson, the recent layoffs were focused on the P11 project, as the team is now being reduced in size. He explained that the initial design and systems are finished, and development is moving towards the beta testing phase, with the game currently planned for release next year.
According to insider Henderson, Eidos Montreal was also working on a Lord of the Rings game. Because Embracer Group, the studio’s parent company, owns the rights to make games based on the franchise, it appears they were attempting to capitalize on that intellectual property. Henderson explained that the game, which didn’t progress far in development, was envisioned as a Lord of the Rings card game with a narrative focus similar to Telltale Games. He believes the recent cancellations at the studio are connected to this project.
Henderson confirmed that roughly 20 employees from Eidos Montreal are contributing to the development of Kojima Productions’ new horror game, OD.
After layoffs at Eidos Montreal, details emerged about projects the studio had previously cancelled. Information came from the resume of a former employee, revealing a planned reboot of Legacy of Kain was among them. However, this project was reportedly cancelled several years ago, not long after Embracer Group acquired the studio, and wasn’t very far along in development when it was scrapped.
