Will there be a Knives Out 4? Everything we know so far

Ever since the popular mystery film Knives Out came out in 2019, audiences have been eager for another Benoit Blanc adventure. The sequel, Glass Onion, arrived in 2022, and the third film, Wake Up Dead Man, will be released on Netflix on December 12, 2025, after a limited showing in cinemas. (You can find our four-star review here.)

Rian Johnson’s three murder mystery films have all been critically acclaimed, and a major reason for their success is Daniel Craig’s performance as the charismatic, Southern detective, Blanc.

With ‘Wake Up Dead Man,’ Rian Johnson finishes his current agreement with Netflix. However, fans may not have seen the last of the ‘Knives Out’ series. Johnson has expressed his desire to continue making these films, telling Variety he’d happily work on them “for the rest of my life.”

A lot of fans online have been enthusiastically requesting a Knives Out movie featuring the Muppets. They envision something similar to The Muppet Christmas Carol, with Benoit Blanc as the only human character surrounded by Muppets.

Johnson rejected the idea in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, explaining that it wouldn’t feel right because the Muppets would essentially be killed off. However, he did express interest in making a traditional Muppet movie at some point.

Right now, it’s a bit uncertain what’s next for the Knives Out movies. With the agreement with Netflix finished, the future of the series is up in the air. Here’s what we’ve learned so far.

Will there be a Knives Out 4?

Netflix currently has the rights to only the second and third movies featuring detective Benoit Blanc. There’s no agreement in place for any films beyond those two. The first movie was made independently and sold to Lionsgate after it was finished, so the same approach – making a film without a prior deal – could happen again if Netflix doesn’t reach an agreement for future installments.

It typically takes about 18 months to make a Knives Out movie, from finishing the script to its release. Director Rian Johnson recently told The Hollywood Reporter that he hasn’t come up with a story idea for a future film yet. He explained that he likes to start completely fresh with each new movie, rather than building on previous ideas.

The future of the Benoit Blanc films is uncertain, but Daniel Craig (Johnson) will definitely be the only actor to play the detective. He’s said he only wants to make these films if he’s genuinely excited about them, and if that changes, he won’t continue the series. Considering his track record, that’s likely a good approach.

When could a Knives Out 4 be released?

The first Knives Out movie came out in November 2019, with the sequels released in December 2022 and 2025. Since there’s been about three years between each film, it’s possible we could see a fourth Knives Out movie around 2028.

However, to keep the Knives Out movies coming out regularly, work on the fourth film would need to start very soon, and it doesn’t seem like plans are currently underway. Finding a new company to distribute the film after the Netflix deal ended will also be a challenge. Plus, director Rian Johnson has said he’s interested in working on a different project before starting another Knives Out movie.

Right now, it’s hard to say when a new movie might come out, but if production starts quickly, we could potentially see another film in three to four years.

Who could star in a Knives Out 4?

What I’ve really loved about the Knives Out movies so far is the incredible ensemble casts they consistently assemble. Think about the first film – Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Chris Evans, and the late, great Christopher Plummer were just a few of the fantastic actors who brought that story to life!

The second and third installments have boasted impressive casts, including stars like Edward Norton, Kathryn Hahn, Dave Bautista, Hugh Grant, and many more—the list goes on and on.

One of the most interesting things about these films is that each one features a completely new group of supporting actors. Considering the well-known and talented actors director Johnson has cast in the past, it’s reasonable to expect future movies will continue to feature similarly famous faces.

Daniel Craig is open to returning for another Knives Out movie. He recently told Gold Derby that while he doesn’t necessarily see it as a three-film series, he’d be willing to make another one if he and director Rian Johnson can come up with a compelling story.

Although plans aren’t finalized, there’s a strong desire to keep this series going. Hopefully, it will!
