Since launching on PC and PlayStation 5 on November 14th, Where Winds Meet has quickly become a very popular game on Steam. The open-world Wuxia simulation has seen an unexpectedly high number of players, exceeding what the game’s developer, Everstone Studio, anticipated.
Beralt Lyu, the lead producer, recently told FRVR that their game had reached nine million players by November 29th – a remarkable achievement just two weeks after it launched globally. Lyu said the team believed in their game’s Wuxia-inspired world, but they were surprised by how quickly it became so popular.
Lyu explained that they were hoping players would enjoy the sense of freedom and intrigue they’d built into the game. However, with nine million players joining in just two weeks, the game far exceeded their expectations. The team is incredibly proud and excited to see years of effort connect with so many people, but they also feel a strong sense of responsibility to deliver a great experience.
Lyu explained that the nine million people playing Everstone Studio’s game, set in a fictionalized 10th-century China, represent more than just a number – they’re nine million unique experiences. He told FRVR that seeing this level of popularity for Where Winds Meet is both inspiring and deeply appreciated.
Lyu expressed deep gratitude and a strong commitment to continued improvement. He explained that the incredible support they’ve received isn’t the ultimate objective, but rather the motivation to keep building and expanding the experience for everyone. He emphasized that this is just the beginning, and they’re thankful to have such a wonderful community alongside them.
I was really relieved to hear from Lyu that even though Where Winds Meet’s way of making money might seem a little over the top, they’re promising it won’t turn into one of those pay-to-win games. Apparently, they’re committed to keeping things fair and aren’t planning any other pushy ways to get you to spend money. It sounds like you’ll only ever be able to buy cosmetic items – just things to change how your character looks – and Lyu thinks that’s actually a good thing, giving Everstone Studio an edge over a lot of other free-to-play games out there.
According to Lyu, maintaining a fair and enjoyable experience for all players – one where success isn’t tied to spending money – is our biggest strength. Because of this, we don’t plan to add features that give paying players an unfair advantage in the future.
As of today, Where Winds Meet remains very popular on Steam, just behind Arc Raiders in player count. With hundreds of thousands of people playing at once, the developers, Everstone Studio, are cracking down on cheaters. They’ve already suspended 5,000 accounts caught using programs like macros and speed hacks. However, players are still discovering ways to get around the game’s rules, including exploiting the AI characters to get valuable items and complete quests.
The open-world RPG, Where Winds Meet, is now available on PC and PlayStation 5. It will launch on Android and iOS devices on December 12th. The developers at Everstone Studio announced on X (formerly Twitter) that over five million players have already pre-registered to play.
