In Star Wars, Anakin Skywalker consistently demonstrates his dedication to the Jedi Order. From the moment he meets Qui-Gon Jinn in The Phantom Menace, he proves his abilities by skillfully piloting a starfighter and destroying a Trade Federation ship threatening Naboo. He continues to excel under Obi-Wan Kenobi’s guidance, quickly becoming the Order’s best fighter and seemingly fulfilling the prophecy of the Chosen One. While the Jedi Council sometimes questions his approach, they can’t deny his success – until Chancellor Palpatine attempts to advance Anakin’s position within the Order.
Having played a key role in the Clone Wars, Anakin feels he’s earned a promotion. The Jedi Order makes it difficult to gain respect without achieving a higher rank, and the films don’t fully show how much Anakin had to do to climb the ladder. Here’s a breakdown of all the Jedi ranks within the official Star Wars story.
7) Initiate

The Jedi Order is constantly searching for children with a strong connection to the Force, identified by a high midi-chlorian count, to bring them to Coruscant for training. These young recruits are called “Initiates” until the Jedi Council officially accepts them. While most applications are quickly approved, the Jedi leadership, as seen with Anakin Skywalker, carefully considers every potential outcome before giving their final approval.
6) Youngling

After a new student shows potential, they start training at the Jedi Temple and become known as a “Youngling.” As seen in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, this is when they begin traveling the galaxy and undertaking the challenging process of building their own lightsaber.
5) Padawan

Jedi trainees don’t instantly become knights with lightsabers. Once their initial training at the Temple is complete, they’re paired with a Jedi Master who continues their education. This learning isn’t limited to classrooms; Masters and their apprentices typically travel the galaxy together, helping those in need and protecting the vulnerable.
4) Knight

As a huge Star Wars fan, I’ve always been fascinated by how Jedi become Knights. Basically, when a Master thinks their Padawan is ready, they can recommend them for the Jedi Trials. What’s cool is that these Trials aren’t standardized – each Jedi’s test is different and really challenges them. Sometimes, the Jedi doesn’t even realize they’re being tested! A great example is Ahsoka Tano; she thought she was just trying to clear her name after a bombing, but that whole ordeal actually was her final Trial to become a Knight.
3) Master

In Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, Anakin gets frustrated because he feels he’s earned the rank of Jedi Master. He’s successfully trained Ahsoka and consistently demonstrated his abilities in battle – achievements that usually lead to promotion. However, the Jedi Council can still prevent someone from ranking up, even if they’re consulted on important decisions.
2) Master of the Order

Becoming a Jedi Master and joining the Council is considered a great achievement, but there are even higher positions within the Order. The Master of the Order is in charge of how things run daily, a role Mace Windu takes on at the start of the prequel films. However, even Windu still reports to someone, as no Jedi, no matter how skilled, can surpass the wisdom and experience of the most legendary Jedi ever.
1) Grand Master

The Jedi Order’s leader is called the Grand Master, and they focus on the overall well-being of the Jedi and the fight for good. Yoda held this position during the Clone Wars, offering guidance to other Jedi. Grand Masters usually remain at the Jedi Temple, overseeing the training of young Jedi, but they will step into action when the entire Order is threatened.
