It often takes a while for game sequels to get started, particularly if the developers move on to other projects. Creative Assembly, for example, first became known for making popular sports games before finding success with strategy games like the Total War series. One of their most famous games, Medieval: Total War, was particularly influential and inspired many other historical strategy games in the years that followed.
The Total War series has explored many different eras and locations, but it hasn’t returned to the medieval period since 2006. That’s about to change with the announcement of Total War: Medieval III. After so many years and improvements to the game, this is fantastic news! However, it will still take some time before the game is released.
Total War: Medieval Is Finally Getting A Third Entry

The popular Total War series has seen several side games, like Total War: Warhammer and Total War: Three Kingdoms, but it’s been 19 years since a new main installment in the Total War: Medieval line was released. Now, to mark the franchise’s 25th anniversary, Creative Assembly has officially announced the long-awaited Total War: Medieval III. The game is currently in the very early stages of development, so specific details and a release date haven’t been revealed yet. However, Creative Assembly describes the game as “the ultimate medieval strategy sandbox,” promising players the freedom to change the world and rewrite history.
The upcoming game will run on the latest version of Warcore, Creative Assembly’s in-house strategy game engine. The developers call it both a tribute to previous games in the series and a fresh, ambitious new direction. Early artwork indicates a historically accurate depiction of the Middle Ages, which should please fans who were hoping for realism. Overall, it’s great news for strategy game enthusiasts, though it looks like the game is still some time away from release.
Total War: Medieval Might Be Years Away From Release

Released in 2006, Medieval II: Total War feels like a game from a different time in today’s gaming world. Players have been hoping for a sequel ever since. The Total War series has explored many settings, but a return to the medieval period is something a lot of strategy game fans have wanted. While the announcement will be thrilling for many, it’s important to remember that the game is still a ways off.
The announcement trailer featured live-action footage with only a few concept art images, indicating the game is currently in early development. It’s confirmed the game will be released on both PlayStation and Xbox, but it’s unclear if it will be for the newest consoles (PS5 and Xbox Series X/S). This suggests the game’s release is likely further off, potentially coinciding with the next generation of consoles – the PS6 or future Xbox – which are currently projected to launch around 2027 or 2028.
Adding to the uncertainty, Creative Assembly has a reveal planned for the Game Awards, but it won’t be about Total War: Medieval III. Instead, it’s for another game within the Total Warfare universe and is intended to set the stage for future installments. Development of Alien: Isolation 2 is also underway, which could further divide Creative Assembly’s focus. Still, the announcement of any new Total War content is exciting for fans who weren’t expecting it so soon, and it gives them a reason to replay the classic games while they wait.
