As a huge Elden Ring fan, I have to say the Nightreign DLC’s final expedition, featuring the Dreglord, is seriously tough! What makes it so hard is the game doesn’t give you any hints about how to beat him – figuring out a strategy feels like shooting in the dark. It’s a real challenge, even for experienced players.
Although you have a first encounter with the Dreglord when the Nightreign DLC begins, the real boss fight is quite different. You’ll first need to defeat the Balancers to start the expedition. Here’s a complete guide to the boss’s attacks, strategies for winning, and the rewards you’ll earn in Elden Ring: Nightreign.
Dreglord Overview in Elden Ring Nightreign
| Attack | Image | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Phase 1 (Traitorous Straghess) | ||
| Corpse Slam |
|
Dreglord conjures a ball made out of bones and corpse flesh that is radiating with Rot and slams it at the player two times. |
| Sweeping Combo |
|
The boss uses its weapon to perform multiple wide swings. |
| Rot from Above |
|
Dreglord slams the ground and starts channeling Rot from the ground below him, forming a large ball of flesh and bones above it. It then explodes the ball, which covers a large area in Rot and also deals damage. |
| Summon |
|
Traitorous Straghess passively summons Corpses or Wormfaces to fight alongside it, and these can also inflict Rot on the player. |
| Phase 2 (Pure Impulse Straghess) | ||
| Rotten Scream |
|
At the start of the second phase, the boss screams multiple times, and every time, the player will be interrupted. The ground below the player will form a small Rot puddle that erupts, dealing damage and Rot buildup. |
| Empowered Combo |
|
Pure Imulse Straghess enhances its sweeping combo by leaping up in the air and slamming down a corpse ball onto the ground, which causes multiple Rot puddles to erupt around the area. |
| Rot Throw |
|
The boss throws small Rot projectiles at the player, which deal damage and inflict Rot buildup. The boss can include this attack in the Empowered Combo. |
| Pillar Leap |
|
Straghess will jump up onto a pillar that forms behind it, then leap to the other pillar, and then do it again in attempts to damage you during the flight animation. |
| Pillar Dive |
|
Dreglord lets out a scream, causing large pillars to appear around it, and also changes the music. it then starts to leap from one pillar to the other before finally slamming down a corpse ball onto the ground, which has a slightly delayed explosion. |
Dreglord Weakness in Elden Ring Nightreign
The Dreglord doesn’t have any clear weaknesses, as it’s described as a unique, mindless mass of flesh. However, it can still take extra damage from certain sources. It’s completely immune to Rot, Poison, and Madness. While Bleed, Frost, and Sleep can be effective, they take a while to build up.
Okay, so as a Nightfarer fan, I’ve learned that if you want to really counter enemies with elemental weaknesses, Holy and Fire are the way to go. The great thing about Fire is that it’s pretty easy to find good weapons during expeditions. And if you’re lucky, you can grind the Crater Shifting Earth mission for some seriously powerful, even legendary, Fire weapons for all your Nightfarers!
Lightning is a bad option to go for this fight, as the boss is strong against it.
Okay, so if you want to really melt the boss’s health bar, bring Fire and Holy Pots, and definitely some Grease! They seriously boost your damage and can make the boss stumble a lot. I usually have the Scholar character carry all of those consumables because they can hold more, so I give them anything I find. It’s a great way to maximize our damage!
How to Beat the Dreglord in Elden Ring Nightreign
Phase 1 – Traitorous Straghess
Okay, so when this boss fight begins, it immediately goes for these big, sweeping attacks and starts throwing these creepy balls of corpses down. If it’s focusing on me, I’ve learned to time my dodges with its attacks because they’re a little slow – but not too slow! Honestly, these first attacks aren’t that hard to deal with, and I can usually get it down to about half health before things really get crazy. That’s when it summons this huge corpse ball, and suddenly the whole arena is covered in Rot, plus a bunch of extra enemies start showing up. It gets hectic fast!
Focusing on the smaller enemies isn’t very effective, mostly because there are so many and the boss keeps creating more. Instead, try to get close to the boss and do as much damage as possible, and use your Ultimate Art right away. If you’re surrounded, move away from the enemies rather than fighting them – they’re generally slow and can’t keep up with you.
Save your Health Flasks for the second part of the first phase and the entire second phase. The biggest problem isn’t necessarily getting hit, but dealing with the Scarlet Rot buildup.
Phase 2 – Pure Impulse Straghess
When the second phase starts, the boss will roar repeatedly. The most important thing to do during this phase is to stay out of the green Rot puddles – they deal heavy damage and cause the Rot status effect to build up. Straghess will also become much more aggressive, attacking with its weapon often and jumping around the arena. Watch out for it throwing Rot projectiles, as it will try to surprise you with those.
Okay, so those attacks where the boss jumps up to the pillars? Seriously dangerous – they hit hard. If you’re not at full health, one of those can easily knock you out. I’ve found this fight is way easier with two other players. We can just keep laying down damage when the boss isn’t actively attacking us. Sure, going solo lets you grab a bunch of Wending Graces, which is a nice bonus, but honestly, it’s tough enough just surviving against this thing, let alone trying to optimize for those graces!
Best Dreglord Team Comps
This boss fight benefits from bringing along several Nightfarers. The Undertaker is a strong choice thanks to her invulnerability skill and ability to stun with multiple Ultimate Arts. The Scholar excels at weakening the boss and dealing significant fire damage. He should save his Ultimate ability for when the boss summons corpses in the first phase, which will help distribute the damage.
Wylder is a strong Nightfarer choice for any team, primarily due to his ultimate ability which inflicts fire damage, and his unique skill that can equip a Relic to add fire damage to his follow-up attacks. Players familiar with Ironeye will likely adapt to Wylder easily, as he offers similar marking capabilities that help avoid dangerous boss attacks. He’s also excellent for safely reviving teammates from a distance.
