Nicolas Cage first became famous in the 1980s with the movie Valley Girl, and since then he’s acted in all kinds of films, including many horror movies. He’s known for his unique performances in horror, like in Longlegs and Vampire’s Kiss, but not all of them have been successful. Now, Peacock is streaming Cage’s latest horror-comedy, which didn’t do well in theaters and received negative reviews from critics.
Even though reviews were somewhat divided, you’ll likely enjoy watching Renfield. This action-packed horror comedy, directed by Chris McKay and based on characters from Bram Stoker’s classic 1897 novel Dracula, began streaming on Peacock on December 9th. The film offers a fresh take on the story, starring Nicolas Cage as the famous vampire and Nicholas Hoult as his long-suffering assistant, who decides he’s ready for a change after years of service.
When Renfield came out, it didn’t do well. It lost money in theaters, earning only $26.9 million with a $65 million budget, and critics weren’t very impressed, giving it a 58% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, don’t let that discourage you – Renfield is actually a good movie.
Renfield Is a Unique Twist on the Classic Vampire Story
The story of Dracula has been adapted for the screen many times, starting with F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent film and appearing in each decade since. However, Renfield offers a fresh approach. Instead of centering on Dracula, the film is a modern, funny, and action-packed horror that playfully reinvents the classic Dracula story. It focuses on a harmful work relationship, while also including nods to the original 1931 Dracula movie.
Nicholas Hoult and Nicolas Cage deliver fantastic performances, with Hoult playing Renfield as a likable character desperate to escape the control of Cage’s brilliantly menacing and self-absorbed Dracula – a role Cage seems perfectly suited for. Renfield’s struggle to break free from his toxic relationship with Dracula feels surprisingly relatable, even within the film’s wild and fantastical setting, and provides a lot of comedic moments, like his attendance at a support group and the new connections he makes. The movie doesn’t shy away from gore, balancing extreme violence with plenty of laughs. Overall, it’s a wildly entertaining horror-comedy that’s sure to please.
What’s New on Peacock?
You can now watch Renfield on Peacock, along with many other new movies added this month. A big group of titles became available on December 1st, including 10 Cloverfield Lane, Gladiator, The Martian, Paul Blart: Mall Cop, and all the Rocky movies. More are coming soon! The Fabelmans will be available December 11th, the Saw movies on December 19th, and Despicable Me 4 on December 28th.
