Paramount and Warner Bros. are currently making big news in the entertainment industry. After reports that Netflix was considering acquiring Warner Bros., Paramount has announced plans for what’s being called a “hostile takeover” – an attempt to buy the company against its will. Interestingly, this is happening around the anniversary of a popular Cartoon Network show. Many are revisiting the very first episode of the series, created by Pendleton Ward, which originally aired on Nickelodeon before moving to Cartoon Network and becoming famous for its world, the Land of Ooo.
Adventure Time originally started as a short on Nickelodeon’s Random! Cartoons back in 2008. The first episode featured familiar characters like Finn, Jake, the Ice King, and Lady Rainicorn, but the animation and voice acting were noticeably different from the show we know today. Creator Pendleton Ward tried to get Adventure Time turned into a full series on Nickelodeon, but they decided not to move forward with it – a decision many now regret! Fortunately, Cartoon Network saw potential, especially after the pilot episode became a hit on YouTube. They picked up the show in 2010, and it’s been a beloved part of animation history ever since. Even after the original series ended, the world of Adventure Time continues with the spin-off, Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake, which explores a new universe with female versions of Finn and Jake.
It’s funny to think that Nickelodeon initially rejected the show idea, believing it was geared towards very young viewers. Although the style of the original Cartoon Network series remained consistent, Fionna and Cake appeals to a much older demographic due to being on HBO Max. If Paramount were to buy Warner Bros., it would complete the story of Adventure Time in a remarkable way. You can watch the original pilot episode that first introduced Finn and Jake below.

Adventure Time’s Bright Future

The second season of Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake is nearing its end, with just a few episodes left. While a third season hasn’t been announced yet, there’s still a possibility we’ll see Fionna and Cake again. Even if they don’t return, other projects set in the world of Oooo are in development. For those unfamiliar with how the original Adventure Time ended, it provided a clear conclusion, but thankfully, creator Pendleton Ward has been open to revisiting this post-apocalyptic world and its many connected universes.
Fans of Adventure Time have more to look forward to! A movie was announced last year, and several spin-offs are now in development. One of these is Heyo B-MO, an animated series geared towards younger viewers and starring the beloved robot. Plus, Finn and Jake will be returning in Adventure Time: Side Quests, a spin-off featuring brand new adventures. Adventure Time was a huge success for Cartoon Network, and it’s interesting to consider what might have happened if Nickelodeon had originally picked up the show.
