For decades, fans have eagerly awaited a sequel to a certain movie. Now, after years of legal issues, the director is finally starting to work on it. In an interview with MovieWeb, Smith discussed the complicated path to making Dogma 2 and explained why he’s taking his time with the project.
It might sound a little silly, but after living as long as I have and experiencing more than I ever imagined, I’m feeling a real pull to try something new. Honestly, I never thought this would happen, which is exciting because it feels completely fresh. Considering my first project came from a place of deep faith, and now I find myself feeling quite the opposite, I’m fascinated by the idea of approaching a new film through that reversed perspective – like looking at things through a completely different filter. It feels like a really interesting challenge.
I’m working at my own pace. I’ve written about 30 pages and then paused to focus on other priorities, and I’m happy with how it’s started. Usually, I get eager to finish things quickly once I start, but that wasn’t true with my project ‘Dogma.’ It took me 20 years to fully develop the idea before I even began writing it.
Kevin Smith Has a Distinct Idea What ‘Dogma 2’ Will Be

Lionsgate
Recent sequels to older movies haven’t always lived up to expectations, but fans of the film Dogma will likely be excited about a follow-up after so long. Kevin Smith has a clear vision for Dogma 2, including how the story will unfold and which actors will be involved.
This new film is intended to complement the first one, and we’d love to include actors from the original if they’re interested. However, the story will focus on a new group of characters. Since the first film dealt with heaven, this sequel needs a fresh perspective and new faces. While it won’t exclude familiar characters, it requires a completely different cast to move the plot forward.
I know a lot of us were concerned that if you hadn’t absolutely loved the first movie, this new one wouldn’t be for you. But the director, Smith, really wanted to make sure this film could stand on its own and appeal to everyone, not just longtime fans.
I’m really hoping to make this new project stand on its own, to be something completely fresh. It’s tough, though, because it is a sequel! It’s like, even ‘Clerks 2’ had the same characters and built on the first film, but it still felt like its own story. I want this to be a whole new experience, a different path for these characters.
