After Larian Studios announced last year that they won’t be making any new downloadable content, expansions, or sequels to their award-winning role-playing game, Baldur’s Gate 3, fans have been eager to know what the studio will work on next.
The studio hasn’t revealed much about its future plans, but many people believe Larian will return to the Divinity series after the success of Baldur’s Gate 3. A third installment in the popular Divinity: Original Sin RPGs seems likely, following the critical acclaim of the first two games.
It’s understandable why people are wondering about a Divinity: Original Sin 3, especially considering how much RPG fans loved Divinity: Original Sin 2, even before Baldur’s Gate 3 brought Larian Studios to everyone’s attention. However, I recently learned from their publishing director, Michael Douse, that a third installment isn’t currently in development, and there aren’t any plans to start one in the foreseeable future.
The developer responded to a fan asking about a potential Divinity: Original Sin 3, saying there are no current plans for a new game, but they will share updates when they’re ready to reveal what they’ve been creating.
This news will likely be disappointing for fans hoping Larian Studios will create a direct sequel to Divinity: Original Sin. However, Larian still might develop another game set within the Divinity universe.
For more than two decades, Larian Studios has created Divinity games, including action RPGs and a real-time strategy title. Their next project could be a continuation of one of those genres, or a new Divinity game inspired by tabletop role-playing, potentially without the ‘Original Sin’ name.
Hey we weren’t meant to announce that yet https://t.co/k4BvvNS5cdDecember 9, 2025
Although there won’t be a direct sequel to Divinity: Original Sin 2, a recent leak suggests a Definitive Edition is on the way. The leak was first spotted by PlayStation Game Size, a Twitter account known for tracking game sizes on the PlayStation database and revealing upcoming releases, and was playfully acknowledged by Larian Studios’ Michael Douse in a humorous online exchange.
Douse responded to a post by PlayStation Game Size, essentially confirming the leak was real and that the announcement wasn’t supposed to be public yet.
All current versions of Divinity: Original Sin 2, whether you’re playing on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, or PlayStation 4, are labeled as the “Definitive Edition.” However, this new release for PS5 (and likely Xbox Series X|S as well) is a completely rebuilt version specifically for those consoles, rather than simply being made to work on them. We can expect a smoother experience with a framerate increase from 30 to 60 frames per second, and at minimum, better-looking graphics.
We don’t know yet if people who already own Divinity: Original Sin 2 will get the upgraded version for free, or if they’ll need to purchase it separately. Larian Studios will likely share details about pricing when they officially announce the Definitive Edition.
Considering all of this, it wouldn’t be shocking if the Definitive Edition is announced at The Game Awards 2025 this Thursday, December 11th. Larian might even release it immediately after the announcement on multiple platforms. Though, calling that a ‘surprise’ release would be a little funny, given how much information has already come out.
Divinity: Original Sin 2 is currently priced at $49.99 on Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation. It’s available for $44.99 on GOG and Steam.
