Many of the most compelling stories we’ve seen lately have actually come from comic books. Comics have also allowed popular horror franchises to expand their narratives beyond movies and television.
It makes you wonder which popular story will get a sequel or continuation next. Several scary movies that hint at further adventures immediately spring to mind.
Dawn Of The Dead Leaves Room For More Carnage
Ten years after creating the modern zombie film with Night of the Living Dead in 1968, George A. Romero revisited the world of the undead in Dawn of the Dead. This sequel centers on four people who find shelter in a shopping mall, where they face not only zombies but also themes of survival, fear, and a critique of consumer culture.
The second film in George A. Romero’s zombie series ends with Francine and Peter, the only survivors, flying away in a helicopter. The ending is open-ended, leaving their fate and the future of the zombie-filled world unknown. It would be interesting to see where their journey takes them and how the story continues from their perspective.
The Autopsy of Jane Doe’s Title Character Has More Stories To Tell
One of the most unsettling horror films in recent years is André Øvredal’s 2016 movie, The Autopsy of Jane Doe. It features Brian Cox (from Succession) and Emile Hirsch (Into the Wild) as a father-and-son team of medical examiners. Their newest case—an unidentified woman played with remarkable composure by Olwen Kelly—quickly becomes a terrifying and baffling mystery.
This story could be developed into a comic in several ways. We could explore the events leading up to the discovery of Jane Doe in a prequel, or continue the narrative directly after the story ends with a sequel. Another option would be an anthology series focusing on different people affected by the mysterious force behind Jane Doe throughout history. As long as the origins of Jane Doe remain a secret, the comic has a lot of possibilities.
10 Cloverfield Lane’s Hero Deserves More Action
Director Dan Trachtenberg took the Cloverfield series in a new direction with 10 Cloverfield Lane, opting for a more straightforward story with a unique premise. The film centers on three characters – played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman, and John Gallagher Jr. – who seek shelter in an underground bunker from an unspecified danger.
In the end, Winstead’s character, Michelle, manages to escape the bunker, only to find herself confronting an alien spacecraft. She destroys it with a Molotov cocktail and then heads towards the main invasion site. While the story concludes there, Michelle is a compelling character with the potential to lead future adventures in this strange and perilous world.
An Insidious Comic Could Introduce Plenty More Ghost Stories
The 2011 film Insidious, directed by James Wan and written by Leigh Whannell, offered a new approach to horror. The story centers on a family whose son, Dalton Lambert (played by Ty Simpkins), mysteriously falls into a coma-like state. Unbeknownst to them, Dalton’s spirit is actually traveling to a dangerous, otherworldly realm, and this is causing terrifying events to happen in their house.
Many fans feel this horror series, originally a big success, has gone on for too long. But there’s a chance to revitalize it with a comic book. This comic could introduce fresh stories and characters unrelated to the original Lambert family, exploring new encounters with the terrifying creatures from ‘The Further’.
Sinners’ Unsung Heroes Deserve To Have Their Story Told
2025 was a fantastic year for horror, especially with the success of Ryan Coogler’s film, Sinners. The movie, set in the Jim Crow South, tells the story of twin brothers—both played by Michael B. Jordan—whose new juke joint is plagued by the arrival of terrifying, bloodsucking creatures.
Honestly, while I loved this movie and its unique take on history and the supernatural, I don’t think a direct sequel is needed. But it did get me thinking… I’d be so excited to see more of those Choctaw vampire hunters! They were such a cool addition, and I think a spin-off focusing on them would be amazing. Maybe even an ongoing comic series – that would really let their story breathe and explore their world.
Evil Dead Comics Should Involve The 2013 Reboot
The horror series created by Sam Raimi, starting with the 1981 film The Evil Dead, has lived on in comic books – especially through the Army of Darkness series from Dark Horse and Dynamite. Throughout all these years, Bruce Campbell’s character, Ash, has been the only consistent figure. Maybe it’s time to introduce some new characters to the mix.
A few years back, fans speculated about a follow-up to the 2013 Evil Dead film, imagining a team-up between Jane Levy’s character Mia and Bruce Campbell’s iconic Ash. While a live-action sequel seems unlikely now, it would make a fantastic comic book. This comic could expand on the series’ history and even introduce the characters from 2023’s Evil Dead Rise – Beth (Lily Sullivan) and Kassie (Nell Fisher from Stranger Things) – to create a team of four.
World War Z 2 Should Be A Comic
Max Brooks’ 2006 novel, World War Z, offered a realistic and complex take on a zombie outbreak, presenting it as a collection of firsthand accounts of a virus that turns people into zombies. In 2013, Brad Pitt starred in and produced a film adaptation, playing a former UN investigator racing to find a solution to the crisis.
For years, plans were underway for a follow-up film, and at one point, director David Fincher – who often worked with Brad Pitt – was nearly attached. However, the project was ultimately cancelled in 2019. Fortunately, this opens the door for continuing Gerry Lane’s story in a comic book series, and it would be great to have Max Brooks involved in that as well.
Who Else Has Oculus’ Killer Mirror Haunted?
Though Mike Flanagan is known for his scary and unsettling films like Doctor Sleep and The Haunting of Hill House, he considers his 2013 movie Oculus to be his most intense. He’s also mentioned having several other stories he’d like to adapt, but hasn’t been able to secure the necessary rights.
Once he understands what’s happening, he could create a series of stories about the mirror’s past, similar to what Kaylie Russell (Karen Gillan) shared in the first movie, but in a new format. A comic book prequel series, presented as a collection of scary and unsettling stories, would be a great way to explore those events.
Invasion Of The Body Snatchers Is The First Chapter In A Terrifying Post-Apocalypse Tale
Most people agree that the 1978 film Invasion of the Body Snatchers is the most faithful and effective adaptation of Jack Finney’s classic science fiction novel about emotionless duplicates replacing humans. While the film stands on its own, the story has potential for further exploration – either by showing us other worlds the ‘Pod People’ have taken over, or by simply continuing the narrative with a sequel.
The movie concludes with Pod Matt finding Nancy, who is still human, right before the credits begin. This leaves viewers wondering if she’ll escape before being taken over by the Pod People, and if any other survivors exist. It also raises the question of whether humanity has a chance against them. However, the biggest idea a comic book continuation could explore is whether a world without emotions would actually be a better place.
Brightburn Set Up A Franchise Of Comic Book-Inspired Horror Tales
James Gunn’s 2019 film, Brightburn, wasn’t a standout horror hit or critically acclaimed. But it presents a fascinating idea: what if a child with powers like Superman wasn’t a hero, but something far more sinister?
The movie ends with a scene after the credits that suggests there are other powerful and unpleasant characters out there, kind of like an evil version of the Justice League. While a follow-up movie would be great, it would also be fun to see Brandon Breyer (Jackson A. Dunn) team up with these villains in a comic book series.
