DC Studios is building its new DC Universe with a long-term vision. The recent success of the Superman movie has encouraged Warner Bros. to plan a sequel, currently titled Man of Tomorrow, for 2027. This next film will feature a team-up between Superman and Lex Luthor as they face a shared enemy, widely speculated to be the DC villain Brainiac. Beyond continuing the story from the David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult film, Man of Tomorrow is also expected to connect with the cliffhanger ending of Peacemaker Season 2. It seems another link between these stories is now being developed.
The first trailer for Supergirl, the second film in the DCU, was released today. Following a preview of Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El in Superman, anticipation for the movie was already strong. The new trailer shows a fast-paced, galactic adventure that feels distinct from James Gunn’s Superman but remains connected to the same universe. Importantly, the film also appears to be laying the groundwork for Man of Tomorrow.
Supergirl Teases the Survival of Argo City

The Supergirl trailer had two main goals: introduce the character – who was only briefly seen in Superman – and highlight what makes her unique, and assure viewers this won’t just be a retread of Superman with a different hero. It largely succeeds at both, but the way it introduces Supergirl hints that DC was already planning its Man of Tomorrow project long before it was officially announced.
The trailer for Supergirl quickly establishes Kara’s history, showing the destruction of her home planet, Krypton. While Krypton appears briefly in other scenes – like what seems to be a funeral – a key moment directly references the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic book series: the survival of Argo City.
As a Supergirl fan, I’ve always been fascinated by the story of Argo City. It was this incredible place on Krypton, shielded by a dome, that somehow survived when the planet exploded! Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow really dives into what happened to the people who lived there after it was sent drifting through space. Even the trailer gives you a glimpse of this. But what really struck me was how the story shows Kara grieving for everything she lost – her home, her family, her whole way of life. It’s heartbreaking to see how her only real connection to that past is through her cousin on Earth and her dog. It really adds a lot of depth to her character.
This film seems to be subtly connecting to the future story of Man of Tomorrow. The Supergirl trailer includes dialogue from the Woman of Tomorrow comic, where Kara remembers Krypton’s destruction and the lost city of Argo. This connects to Brainiac, a villain who, in the comics, possesses another surviving piece of Krypton called Kandor. By establishing Argo City and hinting at other Kryptonian survivors that Brainiac holds, the film could set up a major storyline for Man of Tomorrow, and shape the future development of Supergirl and Superman within the DC Universe.
We’re still guessing, but the upcoming threat of Brainiac and the importance of Krypton’s destruction to Supergirl’s story suggest a strong connection to the next film. While Supergirl will definitely tell its own story and follow its own path within the larger DC Universe, the filmmakers will likely use opportunities to set up future movies. It looks like Supergirl is specifically building towards Man of Tomorrow in a significant way.
