As a huge DC fan, I’ve always been fascinated by the Justice League – they’re the core team, packed with the biggest heroes in the DC universe. They’ve saved the world more times than I can count, battling all sorts of bad guys. But what really gets me thinking is when members of the League themselves become the villains. Often, these aren’t the heroes we know, but twisted, evil versions from alternate realities. Sometimes, though, it’s the main versions of these heroes who change, going through crazy transformations and becoming truly maniacal. And honestly, these dark versions of DC’s heroes are terrifying – they’re incredibly powerful and completely without mercy, making them some of the most dangerous villains out there.
DC Comics often explores what happens when its heroes turn dark. This list highlights the most villainous alternate versions of each member of the Justice League, with only one evil counterpart featured per hero. These are the darkest versions of the League’s most iconic characters.
7) Johnny Quick

Among the many versions of the Flash across the DC multiverse, Earth-3’s Johnny Quick stands out as the most cruel and twisted. Even before gaining super speed, he was a dangerous serial killer. Along with his partner, Atomica, he committed horrific crimes – for example, he once forced two police officers to fight to the death by threatening their families. As a member of the Crime Syndicate, Johnny helps dominate his world through fear and violence, and enjoys killing people for pleasure. During an invasion of the main DC universe, he brutally murdered the hero Karma and sent the Teen Titans to an unknown fate. With his immense speed and deeply disturbed psyche, Johnny Quick is a terrifying take on the classic Flash character.
6) Injustice Wonder Woman

The Injustice Universe (Earth-49) features a villainous Superman, but his descent into darkness wouldn’t have happened without Wonder Woman. In this reality, Wonder Woman experienced a deep trauma: Steve Trevor was a Nazi spy who killed her friend, Calliope. This event fundamentally changed her, turning her into a ruthless warrior. When Superman killed the Joker after a devastating attack on Metropolis, Wonder Woman didn’t try to stop him; instead, she encouraged his anger. Together, they established a fearful, controlling government across the world. Wonder Woman herself committed terrible acts, including killing Huntress and Captain Atom, and commanded her Amazons to massacre the people of the rebuilt Metropolis. While Superman was the public face of this regime, Wonder Woman was the one who truly enforced its brutality and corrupted him along the way.
5) Flashpoint Aquaman

When the Flash tried to save his mother by changing the past, he accidentally created a terrible new reality. In this altered world, Aquaman started a war with the surface world after Wonder Woman killed his love, Mera. This conflict between the underwater kingdom of Atlantis and the Amazons put the entire planet at risk. Aquaman committed horrific acts, including flooding Western Europe and causing the deaths of over 60 million people. He also invaded other universes, kidnapping and attempting to marry a different version of Mera, and even used his powers to drive the hero Vixen to suicide. This darker version of Aquaman, born from the Flash’s time travel, is a vengeful king determined to cover the entire world with water.
4) Monarch

Captain Atom, one of the Justice League’s strongest heroes, unexpectedly became their greatest enemy when he transformed into the villain known as Monarch. After a near-fatal attack by Solomon, Captain Atom was saved by being placed inside the Monarch armor, but the experience severely damaged his mind, leading to a violent outburst. As Monarch, he leveled the city of Bludhaven and then began plotting to conquer multiple universes. To build an army strong enough to challenge the incredibly powerful Monitors, Monarch forced heroes from different universes to fight to the death, taking the winners as recruits. Monarch’s conflict with the Monitors resulted in massive casualties until Superboy-Prime ripped open his armor, causing an explosion that completely destroyed Earth-51.
3) Parallax Green Lantern

One of the most shocking events in DC Comics history involved Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, being taken over by Parallax, a being made of pure fear. After the destruction of his hometown, Coast City, Parallax drove Hal to madness. Desperate to rebuild it, Hal sought more power, but the Guardians of the Universe stopped him. This led to Hal, completely controlled by Parallax, tragically killing all of the Green Lanterns. He then teamed up with the villain Extant, attempting to destroy the universe and create a new one. Fortunately, Hal eventually overcame Parallax and made the ultimate sacrifice, giving his life to save the sun.
2) Superboy-Prime

DC Comics features many evil versions of Superman, but Superboy-Prime from Earth-Prime is perhaps the most disturbed and dangerous. He’s incredibly powerful – strong enough to break reality with a single blow – and has used that power to commit terrible acts. Driven mad by the loss of his home universe and determined to create a perfect world, Superboy-Prime embarked on a campaign of destruction across multiple universes, wiping out trillions of lives. He’s responsible for horrific events, including the slaughter of hundreds of Green Lanterns, a war between the planets Rann and Thanagar, and the deaths of many Teen Titans members, as well as even killing the Superman from another universe (Earth-2). Although he may be trying to change now, the sheer scale of his past actions is unimaginable.
1) Batman Who Laughs

The Batman Who Laughs is arguably the most cruel and sadistic being in existence. Originally a hero from an alternate, nightmarish universe, he became corrupted after killing the Joker and being exposed to Joker Venom, which drove him insane. He then murdered his entire heroic team, transformed children into monstrous creatures, and manipulated Superman into killing Lois Lane, ultimately destroying nearly all life on his world. This twisted version of Batman didn’t stop there – he led a team of villainous alternate Batmen in an attack on the main DC universe. He helped a powerful goddess named Perpetua wipe out trillions of lives, and eventually gained the power to create his own terrifying universes, becoming known as the Darkest Knight.
