So, I was reading up on the new Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic game, and even though the title and the fact that it’s being made by a studio with the original Knights of the Old Republic director in charge makes you think it’s a sequel, it’s actually not! According to Lucasfilm Games’ Douglas Reilly, it’s more of a tribute to the classic KOTOR – a way to show love for that original game, rather than continuing the story directly.
Having worked on multiple Star Wars games, including the Star Wars: The Old Republic MMORPG, Reilly explains that the new game aims to continue the tradition of immersive, story-focused role-playing that fans love. He emphasizes that the game is being developed by many of the same people who originally created that legacy.
Casey Hudson, the CEO of the studio and director of Knights of the Old Republic, shared his thoughts on returning to the Star Wars universe after nearly two decades, as the original RPG launched in 2003. He explained that starting a new, large-scale Star Wars RPG required a significant commitment from the entire team, and everything needed to be just right before they could begin.
The new Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic isn’t a direct continuation of the original BioWare RPG because Disney has essentially reset the established Star Wars backstory. After acquiring the franchise, Disney began building its own history for Star Wars through new films, shows, books, and comics. While the original Knights of the Old Republic isn’t considered official canon anymore, Fate of the Old Republic will likely draw from the newer lore Disney has created.
According to Hudson, when the team created the first KOTOR game, their goal was to make the ultimate Star Wars adventure, filled with everything they’d always wanted to see in a Star Wars game. Now, 25 years later, they have the same high hopes for Fate of the Old Republic. They see it as a chance to create a new, definitive Star Wars experience, using the latest technology and design techniques, and a brand-new story that will give players the freedom and immersive feeling that made the original KOTOR so special.
Hudson explained that Arcanaut Studios, his development team, landed the Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic project because he’d stayed in touch with Lucasfilm for over twenty years since the original Knights of the Old Republic came out. This long-standing relationship meant that initial talks about a new project went smoothly.
Hudson of Arcanaut Studios explained that their aim is to create games that are emotionally resonant, feel like a movie, and give players meaningful choices within a deeply detailed and immersive world. He shared that discussions with Lucasfilm Games resulted in the amazing chance to revisit the Star Wars universe, a project the team is thrilled to be working on.
I was so excited when they announced Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic at The Game Awards this year! The teaser trailer looked amazing, but unfortunately, we don’t have a release date yet. I’m really hoping it comes out soon!
