New MCU Rumor Claims Two Avengers Were Cut From Doomsday (Will They Ever Return?)

Figuring out who’s in the Avengers: Doomsday movie is surprisingly complex. It makes sense to see the Fantastic Four and New Avengers featured, as both teams have films coming out in 2025. But that’s just the beginning. We’ll see Sam Wilson assemble his new Avengers team in 2026, and the X-Men will also be part of the film. However, the biggest story isn’t who is in the movie, but who isn’t. Brie Larson, Mark Ruffalo, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Tom Holland are notably absent from the current cast list. While cameos are common in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so their appearances aren’t impossible, there’s no confirmation they’ll be involved.

The focus on Holland and Co. is creating some uncertainty about the next Avengers movie, as other potential cast members appear to be waiting for their chance. According to Alex Perez at Cosmic Circus, Hawkeye and War Machine won’t be appearing in the next film while Marvel Studios decides on their future roles.

According to Perez, the surprise reveal in Secret Invasion – that Rhodey had been replaced by a Skrull – is creating complications. Originally, an Armor Wars movie was planned to focus on War Machine, giving him a leading role and delving into the psychological effects of his time in cryogenic storage. However, that project is currently stalled, and Marvel Studios may be hesitant to revisit Rhodey’s story until they can fully commit to it.

I’m a big Hawkeye fan, and it sounds like Clint Barton is truly retired now, which is what he deserves! The creator said he’s done, and honestly, after passing the torch to Kate Bishop and seeing her join the Young Avengers, it makes sense. With no plans for a second season of his Disney+ show, it’s great to think of him just relaxing and spending time with his family. He’s earned it!

It’s Time to Let the Original Avengers Rest

Look, as much as I want to see those two major MCU heroes jump into the Doomsday battle, I honestly think it’s the smart move to keep them out. The movie’s already packed with characters, and trying to shoehorn in two more fully developed ones would just dilute the focus on the team we are getting. Plus, I’m a big believer in letting heroes have their moment to retire, you know? It feels more earned and respectful to their arcs.

Hawkeye and War Machine are two of the most experienced fighters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but they have passions outside of battling aliens and robots. It’s time to let them explore those interests as a new group of heroes steps up to take the lead.

Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
